Where I live, I scan the items with my phone and put them straight into my own bag, then at the self-checkout I just scan the QR and pay through the app.

Yeah, I’ve lived basically my whole life going from commie block to commie block and I have never had problems with hearing the neighbours. Only in one of them where the bathroom was kind of unfinished so I could hear the neighbour from 3rd floor playing their piano (idk how the hell they got it in there), but none other than that.
