Saw one of those yesterday. Should be super illegal, they’re so bright.
- Comment on Every "non-smoking" section in a restaurant 1 week ago:
It’s state by state in the US but there’s very few where smoking would be allowed in a restaurant left. Specifics are often down to the city level. They still allow smoking on outdoor patios in my city. There used to be provisions around tavern licenses where they could have smoking indoors in a room which had separate external ventilation but that’s really in the weeds of zoning. I think they’re trying to kill the few of these licenses remaining, too.

I’m not a huge fan of it still but at this point it’s not a bad game, just not to everyone’s taste (which btw seems to be true of most open world survival crafters… I’ve noticed that being a fan of any one of those games is a poor predictor of whether you’ll be a fan of any of the others).
- Comment on Rumor: Marvel Is Making Another Avengers Game 2 weeks ago:
I’ve wondered why Disney hasn’t moved into that field, but I bet they look at MS’s experience as a huge cautionary tale. Massive company, very tech savvy, was willing to spend a ton of money to get a big boost in the industry…and 20 years later was it worth it? Disney’s main thing is its valuable IP, not software. Games studios don’t really integrate that well with the rest of their business. AAA games get more expensive to produce every day, even moreso than blockbuster movies. Probably more profitable to license their IP to the highest bidders and let other companies shoulder the risk.

- Comment on Does the US really have no instruments in case a newly elected president immediatelly and openly exposes he's a nazi? 2 weeks ago:
In theory, if he went so far over the line that he became very unpopular, then Congress members would fear for their reelection chances if they didn’t publicly break with him. But with him attacking democracy itself, Congress may be more afraid of him than they are of voters. It’s a deeply troubling time.
- Comment on Does the US really have no instruments in case a newly elected president immediatelly and openly exposes he's a nazi? 2 weeks ago:
I am not arguing in favor of authoritarianism or against democracy, to be clear. Just saying there is an inherent risk that if you give the common people power, the common people might do something dumb with it. I’m not aware of a system that removes that risk without other considerable downsides. There are other democratic governments that have fewer structural issues than the US, but none of them prevent the whole “sometimes, voters are very dumb” thing.

But Trump hasn’t proven unpopular; that’s why he won reelection. If the ruling party has a majority and the PM has their party’s support, nothing would happen in most other systems either.

Well the mechanism for preventing criminals who shit all over the constitution from getting reelected is supposed to be people not voting for him. There’s not really much a constitutional democracy can do about voters being fucking morons. Kind of an inherent flaw in the system.
- Comment on Does the US really have no instruments in case a newly elected president immediatelly and openly exposes he's a nazi? 2 weeks ago:
Yeah, it’s rather obviously flawed in light of the current situation, but that is the mechanism that exists in the constitution.

It has impeachment. The list of reasons for impeachment are (quite possibly intentionally) vague. But it has to be done through Congress.
- Comment on After the catastrophe of Concord Sony is reportedly cancelling other projects including a God of War live service game 3 weeks ago:
Basically a game that is continuously updated with new content. Lots of different models of it from MMOs to Fortnite to Diablo IV. Many of them are free to play with lots of microtransactions. They usually feature things like seasons and battle passes and loot boxes. They’re almost always heavily monetized. The competition in the “genre” is incredibly fierce since most people probably only play a handful of them and friend groups usually all want to be on the same game. It’s very hard to break into. Sony announced that they were making a big investment into the area a few years ago and news has been trickling out since that most of them have been canceled.

Bake my own bread and freeze it all the time. It’s fine in the short term, and fine for much longer term if you vacuum seal. Bread that’s not loaded with preservatives goes bad in a matter of days otherwise, so freezing is just practical.

- Comment on The future of Blu-ray is looking bleak (and that's a bad thing for everyone) 4 weeks ago:
Well that’s probably a bit predictable given what community this is. But I really think the pricing is way out of line with what your average person is willing to pay and it only serves to make the physical media more niche.
- Comment on Anon expects more 4 weeks ago:
The back and forth on twitter/bluesky over this topic was pretty wide ranging, and size/cost definitely was a topic discussed. And besides a lot of the “quality” of BG3 was the fact that it supported endless paths through the game, something which requires a lot of development effort.
- Comment on Anon expects more 4 weeks ago:
Making smaller games isn’t a bad thing. Every game being a BG3 would be completely unsustainable. Sure, that game was a great accomplishment, but also imagine if they’d made the game that size and it was bad. It would’ve probably sunk the studio. I’m all about more A and AA games. Not everything needs to be a 300 person effort.
