- Comment on What is the longest discontinuous marriage? 1 day ago:
This sounds like a job for a weird spaghetti code contraption consisting of selenium, perl, DBI, postgres, and shitloads of caffeine. I’ll give it a look tomorrow, hoping that the captcha I assume is there can be circumvented or automated one way or another.
I’m not really interested in the people, as I’m not from the US and am unlikely to be related to any of them. I’m just curious about the dataset itself, especially in relation to OPs question.
- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 1 day ago:
Credit scores aren’t a direct result of currency. Credit scores are the result of lending and credit, which is possible without currency.
Example: “I could give you this car if you promised to bring me schwiftyfive thousand sheep tomorrow, but according to my records you’re only good for schiftytwo sheep. Sorry pal. Here, first borrow this chicken, and give me an egg every day for a few years to prove that you’re the kind of guy/gal/ghoul who honors debts, and we can discuss the matter again.”
- Comment on Am I supposed to ask stupid questions here, or *not* ask stupid questions? 1 day ago:
It is to be interpreted as “no questions here will be considered stupid”.
Sure, there are exceptions, but most good-faith questions are OK, especially if it’s something that you feel you should already know, or something you sim0ly fail to understand.
- Comment on What is the longest discontinuous marriage? 1 day ago:
That’s a really interesting question, but I’m having a hard time seeing how one can look this up without direct access to an SQL database of all married people. Can we pay off some government sysadmin?
- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 1 day ago:
Because they represent a resource, concrete or abstract. Currency is easily exchanged, either for other currencies, or for goods and services. This allows for a lot more opportunities than hauling around a swarm of sheep for bartering at the car dealership.
- Comment on American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse? 2 days ago:
Definitely.
- Comment on American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse? 2 days ago:
Kind of. We have one political party simply named “Red”. They’re the result of a few far left parties joined forces a few years back, two of which were communists. I’m not a big fan of communism myself, as that’s a bit too autocratic for my taste, but the fusion has resulted in a party that is more evened out and focused on general socialism.
- Comment on American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse? 2 days ago:
Nah. “Everyone” here speaks english.
Actually, as a nurse I guess it makes sense - The few that don’t are seniors.
- Comment on American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse? 2 days ago:
Can confirm.
Source: I’m a noggie and my sister in law is a nurse, and I get the impression they’re always short staffed.
- Comment on [Serious] Do you know of any processed snack foods with some vitamins? 1 week ago:
Here in scandinavialand, we have “vitamin bears”. They’re like multivitamins, but taste like (and are in the shape of) gummy bears.
- Comment on [Serious] What is project 2025? What kind of risk is involved? 1 week ago:
Pretty much this.
Also, say what you will about NY Times, but they had a pretty good summary of this dismantling farily recently, and its implications.

- Comment on Anon can’t have a factual argument 1 week ago:
I am from a country that has tended to view poland in a less than flattering way. And yes, the past tense is intentional. I had the pleasure of spending a large part of 2008 in the Gdansk and Gdynia area, and I absolutely loved it. Beautiful place and friendly people.
I remember a coworker saying something along the lines of “I now understand why we have the stereotype about poor quality craftsmen coming over to us - because the best ones never left home” while we were walking through the town.

Wr don’t known the policy of the balloons in your area. I suggest finding a balloon you get along with and ask it of its return policy.

I don’t use tiktok, and I use revanced (patched youtube client) partially to hide all of the shorts.
- Comment on If a universal basic income started today with the stipulation that you had to put 40 hrs/wk towards making the world a better place or solving societal problems, how would you spend your time? 2 weeks ago:
Except some minimum wage jobs involve making the world worse.

- Comment on If you're selected for jury duty (US), should you give up your anonymous social media accounts? 3 weeks ago:
Disclaimer: Nor a US citizen, byt I think the reporting threshold is similar.
So, I recently applied for a bunch of US work visas as part of my job. C1/D, B1, and B2 to be precise. (Mostly to get my TWIC for easy port entry, honestly). And part of the process involved listing my social media accounts.
I don’t use my Facebook anymore, and my lemmy (and then reddit) account isn’t really significant. Beyond those, the only one with my name on it is my LinkedIn, which does in fact hilight an aspect of my job that shows why the above mentioned visas would be useful for me. So I ended up only listing my linkedin.
Visas approved. I don’t think anyone cares hard enough to actually check unless your name is Daddy Al Baddy

Ksp2 has come a long way since the initial release and the frustrations associated with it. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s still very much early access, and the progress thus far looks promising
- Comment on Why do we have to do the health insurance company's job for them? 4 weeks ago:
they don’t want to do anything to resolve the issue either. In any other line of work, that’s an excellent way of forfeiting any right to getting paid.
In the jobs I’ve had where I’ve had to bill someone, I’m having a hard time imagining that I could expect to get paid if I just sent a bill to someone who didn’t owe me.
- Comment on Why do we have to do the health insurance company's job for them? 4 weeks ago:
One of the biggest advantages I see from living under single payer health care is that I don’t have to put in extra clerical work like you describe. Sure, the insurance company should be able to pick up a phone, but In my opinion, the responsibility should rest on the hospital - they are the ones demanding a payout.
- Comment on Could a bird propel a skateboard by flapping its wings? 4 weeks ago:
According to all known laws of skateboarding, there is no way a bee should be able to do a kickflip. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body rolling over the ground.
