Quite true. Linux and all modules loaded into it are GPL licensed. The userland and tooling on the other hand can be licensed however. They are free to close source on anything except kernel code.

This is the first step in moving to fully closed source. I guess degooled versions are getting too popular thus a threat to google’s business.
- Comment on Popular Chrome extensions hijacked by hackers in widespread cyberattack 4 weeks ago:
You set the webpage to self refresh on interval by itself no extensions needed.
- Comment on Popular Chrome extensions hijacked by hackers in widespread cyberattack 4 weeks ago:
“Page refresh”. You mean F5 (or ctrl + r) right?
- Comment on Popular Chrome extensions hijacked by hackers in widespread cyberattack 4 weeks ago:
All of these already sound shady.
- Comment on Discord requiring you to add a phone number **after** the creation of your account 5 weeks ago:
This is or was part of their anti-spam/flooding protection.
That’s the official explanation. A phone number is a nice way to attach a real world identity to the data (which of course is sold to advertisers/data brokers etc).

- Comment on Why 'free' proprietary software will always end in tears 5 months ago:
Excellent article. That’s why I use OSS first and foremost as they don’t have the incentive to bring in € instead they are more focused on a quality product.
- Comment on Reminder that Jagex Privacy Policy is Opt Out - Link in Description 7 months ago:
Under GDPR this kind of data collection and sharing HAS to be opt-in i.e. with an informed consent. You can’t just bury it in your TOS and/or privacy policy. The user has to be explicitly shown what they are collection, on what basis they are doing it and how they are using it, then give the user the choice to accept and decline that, and they have to respect that decision.

There’s quite a huge domino effect in the food chain if we would cause mass extinction to mosquitoes as they are the food for many species of birds which are then food for the next thing and so on.

Currently EEA consists of the EU states + some other European countries.

It’s good to live in the EU where such terms don’t apply.
- Comment on MFA 11 months ago:
If I read it correctly the “fuck off” level refers to some proprietary app for the selected login. The other two are standard code app and yubikey.

For now. I’m quite sure that option will disappear at some point in the not too distant future.

- Comment on The fall of Firefox: Mozilla's once-popular web browser slides into irrelevance 1 year ago:
That’s Firefox’s fault not the plugins. They don’t allow any plugin to run in internal pages.

- Comment on Locked out - Google's absurd security measures won't log me in 1 year ago:
Google is lying to you. They don’t want your phone number to “verify it’s you”. They want your phone number because it’s an effective measure against bot accounts.
There you’re correct that they are lying and don’t want the number to verify. They want it so they can link the profile they have to an actual person. That’ll make the profile more valuable to them. Better tracking etc.
