There’s always so much money to be made running care homes - children’s homes, nursing homes, halfway homes etc.

All these used to be run completely by the government, but they’ve been moved into the private sector supposedly because that’s the only way to make them provide better service at lower cost. This article is about unregulated children’s home providers, but even ones that are fully legit often fail to provide a good standard of care.

The staff at these privatised institutions always seem to be earning absolute rock-bottom wages, so where is all the money going?

It just seems like a cookie-cutter outsourcing model - and its method of exploitation - has been used across all public services

Slightly off-topic but my experience lots of children’s and mental health support involves grifters who set up “charities” that have websites that look to casual readers as providing lots of support but, in reality, very little exists on the ground. Lots of services that used to be provided by the NHS have been effectivesly privatised to “charities” and “non-profits”. They seem to exist primarily to provide people running the charities with employment.

Sounds like that Camilla Batmangella Kids Company charity that was caught fiddling the books instead of caring for children.
