As opposed to showing a pic and having any other scammer take it off the finder so they can extort the real owner for cash or worse? Or handing it to any lying animal abuser to take advantage of? What’s the problem with how they chose to do it?

IMO, the best way to handle a lost pet that you found is to take it to a vet. Yeah it’s a bit inconvenient, you could also call animal control, but they’re pseudo-cops and might screw an otherwise innocent owner.
The vets can easily check for a chip or look up tags, which will get them home. You then also don’t have to deal with the crazies thst accuse you of trying to steal their pet. (Or poison them.)

This seems like an extremely secure way to find out who owns the dog…anyone can just say a dog belongs to them and then take it and do god knows what with it.
At least this way, the real owner is likely the only one who can step up and claim their dog.

Exactly. What’s the issue here? This is literally the right way to do this.
