  “Sanctuary Cities” as the US American media reports them, do not exist. They’re a boogeyman invented to sell far-right propaganda.

  As far as what happened to the migrants that were lied to, kidnapped, and sent across the country against their will; once they arrived at their destination, they were given food, water, shelter, adequate clothing, and transportation to wherever they wanted. It disrupted absolutely nothing in the cities where they arrived.

  Those people were an unwilling prop for a publicity stunt that accomplished nothing other than pushing a narrative to cult members.

    Well the busing did succeed at one thing, which is demonstrating that Adams was a shitty human with no actual values and showed that democratic governors and mayors often view migrants as a net negative even though they’re not. It was a great example of the problem with liberal politics, more obsessed with playing a game than caring for people and standing up for them. Even though they said stuff like they’re using them as pawns (true), the real response should have been thank you for sending us statistically better law abiders and hard workers. We will make sure they want to stay because them leaving yiur shithole state makes yours worse and ours better.

  In one of the more extreme cases where Duh Santis rented a jet to abandon a bunch of immigrants on Martha’s Vineyard without notice - we brought them to the mainland where there were already facilities. It was all just a game for headlines at the immigrants expense

  Most of the noise about that was New York City. NYC doesn’t have the kind of tent cities other big US cities do because it lost a lawsuit in the 1980s and is under a court order requiring some minimal funding for homeless shelters. The previous mayor of NYC tried to use the busses as an excuse to get on TV and cry about how much of a crisis it was every day hoping to pressure a judge to cancel the order and let him defund the homeless shelters. That didn’t work, and then Mamdani got elected and this is one of those situations where he just turned off the orphan crushing machine and it was immediately fine.

  So you’re conflating two separate things. Sanctuary Cities are cities that have official policies in place prohibiting cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration enforcers. These have existed for quite a while. Some racist state governors and federal authorities decided “well if you like immigrants so much have some more” and started illegally rounding up immigrants in their cities, lying about destination, ignoring federal laws, and bussing these immigrants to cities that declared themselves to be Sanctuary Cities. Those cities responded appropriately and took care of the immigrants foisted upon them. Of note, these forced relocations occured with little notice to legal teams, meaning some immigrants were shipped multiple states away and missed important immigration court appointments.

  My city’s still a sanctuary city. Mostly, the effects seem to be that people really want to live here a lot, and then lots of people move here.

  sanctuary cities

  Cities that strongly oppose the draconian US immigration policies and punitive measures. Typically, “blue” cities in “blue” states. The municipalities in question have enacted (often with some level of state government support) measure to prohibit local law enforcement from collaborating or cooperating with federal immigration enforcement personnel from any agency.

  immigrant bussing to sanctuary cities

  This was 100% a political optics thing run by red states and red politicians. It consists of sweeping up unhoused people in a red city, or somewhere in a red state (most typically, FL and TX, as the governors there are extremely supportive of draconian immigration policies for political reasons - despite the fact that said hostile policies are actually actively harmful to their regional economies), sticking them onto Greyhound buses to major “blue” cities, waiting for the unhoused population of those recipient cities to explode, and then pointing at the completely synthetic situation as evidence of gross mismanagement by blue city/state politicians. It’s not being done as aggressively right now because it’s simply not the currently biggest political hot button in the US right now.
