A lot of government processes are dehumanizing. They’re targetted at “reducing fraud” and cost savings, which in practice means doubting you at every turn and cutting away your lifeline whenever they can.

I receive the Scottish equivalent and the experience could not be more different than my friends description of his encounter with the PIP process. The Social Security Scotland staff that I interacted with throughout the process genuinely seemed to care about me. Someone came to my home to help me with my application and assisted me in writing it in such a way that I’d get as much help as possible.

I have another friend who works with Social Security Scotland and he says that going after fraud is such a tiny fraction of the work he does. I personally agree with that philosophy, its worth accepting that some small percentage of fraudsters will slip through the cracks to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible for those that truly need it.

My wife claims pip and application is awful in every way. I cannot believe there is anyone that successfully gets pip who should not. I find it much more likely that there are many people who should get it but don’t because their disability prevented them filling in the application.

It seems like such false economy having all these systems and awfulness to reduce fraud. Of course, that’s not why they’re there, but still, the justification is dumb.

Scotland is receiving a massive cash infusion from English taxes. Easy to spend other people’s money.

You could apply that same logic to the north of England, most of the tax is raised in the South East and London. You can’t make this a blanket Scotland vs England thing.

Scottish income tax bands raise more money than their UK equivalents per capita and I’m happy to pay that for better services.
