This is purely due to an ownership change. The incoming majority owner Rogers (previously co-owner) didn’t like Masai. There were reports of some friction between them in prior years. He bought out the other co-owner last year and the deal finally closed this month. He’s keeping the rest of the management team but pushing Masai out.

    Raptors in the Masai era:

    2019 NBA Champions

    8 playoff appearances

    545-419

Their 56.5% win percentage is the fifth best in the NBA since 2014.

Rogers also owns the Leafs and Jays is a Trump fan for what it’s worth.

Now for the relevant bit. During Masai’s last contract negotiation, Rogers made noises about paying him as one of the premium executives in the league. With Larry T, who is a Masai supporter, selling his stake, Masai’s days were numbered.

Masai’s tenure post-championship has been mixed but I’m in the camp that this move will lead to further instability because whoever they bring in will eventually clean house.
