I was in a shit place 5 years ago. Have this reaction for different reasons.

I was a kid so fairly ignorant of wider issues, but I do miss the 90s where it felt like things would only ever get better…

Then I reached the 2000s and graduated highschool into the Iraq war and it’s only been downhill from there. :/

From the timeline you are describing you were not a kid 5 years ago. Maybe I am missing something

I was just referring to the general sentiment of “when things were less bad”

That really feels like maybe two years ago.

COVID was pretty good times in retrospect, as long as you didn’t get sick, laid off or died.

Or knew someone who died. Or had to work customer service as an “essential worker” in a blue city in a red state where customers treated you like shit for enforcing the mask mandate. Or had a family member that got brainwashed by the president into thinking they were literally going to have to shoot you in the upcoming Civil War. Or you had to isolate from your friends and family because your partner had a pre-existing condition. Otherwise, pretty good times.
