Basically: if the Roku device detects it is not actively playing a video, it will show ads. Whether or not tbis will happen while your TV is set to another input that doesn’t contain a Roku device isn’t clear based on the akimming I did through the diagrams.

This is for roku TVs, which are TVs fhey sell with intergrated roku media players.
This patent will affect anything plugged into the TVs hdmi ports. Apple tv? Xbox? Whatever, it reads the hdmi pause state and then uses it built in roku player to overlay ads on your screen.
