as well as what @jjagaimo@lemmy.ca said, there is also a scaled weight based on time since activity that is applied to hot/scaled sorting that allows things to bubble to the top but to slowly sink as they get older

here in NZ I’d say we are much more progressive than the states, although we have a centre right government at the moment.
you will earn less than the US I would think, but I would hope that our quality of life is better.
Safety? not every second person is carrying a sidearm or protesting with an AR style firearm

- Comment on I'm so tired of hearing about US police brutality and China being authoritarian. Why does it feel like everyone is a hypocrite here? Where are the posts about Chinese protests and police brutality? 6 days ago:

just look at the number of posts in the *nix and self hosting communities for comments about pre and early linus users, or selfhosting email back in the day

Good on them for having/gaining the strength to come out and go through a process that must be very difficult. Shame on people that call it out as a posable bad thing and attempting to shame them

I didn’t see in a quick read, but I believe that the US still has very high colony deaths per year - even if the total number of managed colonies is increasing

My brother makes them and sells a few, but considering that we are on the other side of the world to most people postage is a killer.
He doesn’t have a ‘store’, although I did put one together for him during lockdown, but you could contact him through insta Wooden Jeff

Yeah, we had 27 yesterday (Christmas eve) and light rain all day. Very uncomfortable for New Zealand. At least today is a tad cooler
- Comment on is there a way to refederate instances just for me? 4 months ago:
That’s not too far off the mark, It cost me about $20 AU so probably $15 US. I could get cheaper if I wanted to host further from home (I’m happy with a AU host for my New Zealand instance)

- Comment on How would I start as a database consultant for a niche software? 6 months ago:
Do I make a website pretending I’ve been doing this for years, then send out an email being like “Y consulting is now accepting new clients who use software X, check out some of our most popular custom reports, then fill out this form to get a quote for one of your own!” to just every person in the industry and hope someone actually reads the email?
As a site manager for a smallish international, pleas don’t email me with “I am X, and can help you with Y”. You will be thoroughly ignored.
I good website or blog with good info and a services available would be of more value to build a reputation, as @fubarx@lemmy.ml mentioned

Weird Numbering Schemes
Bryn notes that the High Street in Kingswinford is numbered by the distance from one end of the road in metres. They have still kept odd and even numbers on opposite sides of the road.
This is the only sane way to number houses, and 10’s of metres for rural roads:
- In Town: 120 Highstreet would be 120m from the start of the road, and 125 would be on the other side of the road (Left being odd numbers)
- Rural: 512 would be 5.12km from the start of the road
