So glad to hear that. There are definitely some options out there still and hopefully you can nab something with a little courtyard or even shared space for the plants.

Feeling better than yesterday. After considering all my options, talking to various people, and actually having a look online⊠Iâm starting to think that maybe moving will be a better option even if it means being trapped in a 1yr lease - if I stay close to work I donât need a second bedroom for effective WFH, and that opens up much more affordable options, which offsets the costs of possibly breaking my lease in June/July. Itâll only ever be a short term thing anyway, and in that context⊠I could live with a lot less than I have now, and with no balcony (Iâll have to give away my plants at some point).
Now is also probably a great time to look as uni students finish up, before the deadness of Jan and then influx in Feb.
Sad that itâs come to this but holy hell the sheer stress of feeling unsafe in my own home is not worth it. My body feels better for having looked.

For sure, thereâs some with small balconies that might let me keep my best plants (curry leaf and chillies) so thatâll be a real bonus if I can get that. At this point my first priority is a good kitchen, a quiet area with greenery, and plenty of natural light - a place I donât feel actively miserable in. The rest is a bonus.

Dunno where you are but last I was looking there were some good older-brick-but-solid little blocks out in the inner west and down round Newport/Yarraville. But I hear you. Natural light and a functional kitchen are the non negotiables for me too.

Iâm in the east, itâs not a cheap area for sure but thereâs enough old stock apts that itâs doable. I want to stay in this general area short term as a short commute is non-negotiable for me right now - I value that more than having the plants tbh. Long term I certainly wonât be staying on here, possibly not even in Melbourne at all tbh.

Would you prefer to WFH or do a full week on site?
I hope youâll be able to reach a satisfactory resolution soon.
Was your LL always like this?
just_kitten@aussie.zone âš5â© âšweeksâ© ago
She was never like this at all - sure did a few hapless things like not give enough notice for trades stuff and bringing her partner in on inspections but was always positive and easy to deal with. She loved my plants! This seems very uncharacteristic. Iâm going to guess her finances are in trouble.
With the job Iâm keeping I prefer working in the office. It wonât be boring as there will be some site inspection work coming up, so living close to office makes it easy to grab a pool car to head off.

She doesnât seem to be up with tenants rights and stuff from how you describe things.
I think one thing she may not bank on is if you leave and she canât rent it out sheâll get no income from it at all.
Ah ok. Thatâs a plus for sure then if you donât need to WFH.

I donât think she is aware of tenantâs rights at all, since this is her first rodeo with an IP and especially without an agent. Which means itâs also on her to advertise and vet new tenants etc. I thought sheâd want to work with me too so that she could avoid losing income, but I guess sheâd now rather risk it. Sheâll definitely get someone in but Iâm not sure itâll be as quickly as she thinks.
And good luck also if when sheâs showing the place, the derros down the road start acting up lol. I kind of hope they do, and that next doorâs disabled adult kid starts moaning and banging on thingsâŠ
