Because I created a community of ELI5 before I even knew they existed and thought it would be less confusion for people trying to join a community.

It’s just the way Lemmy is structed. If you want somebody to be a mod, you need to do it through a post/comment they’ve made in your community. Ask them to post/comment something and you can add them.

If your instance has the Photon UI as an option, It’s possible to add and remove mods without an existing post in the community through the team menu.

It’s one of a couple design changes I completely rejected lemmy-ui’s version of. Why on earth is it on a commonly used menu? I feel like it makes so much more sense to put it on the community settings page.

100% agree!
I was actually accidentily made an admin on my instance due to how easy it is to misclick when making someone a mod with the standard menu. Your design is leagues better.
