Libertarians are basically right-wingers who also like to smoke weed and want legalization.

Is “don’t tread on me” libertarian? I always thought it was right wing.

Here in the US those mean the same thing. That is, “Libertarian” specifically means right libertarian for some reason.
saltesc@lemmy.world 5 months ago
It doesn’t even mean that, since there’s all the oppressive social rights they support. A free market may be the only common ground shared with right libertarianism, then things go wildly different

This is anti government, that is the killdozer that treaded on the local government officials.
Kaboom@reddthat.com 5 months ago
Well, only the right wing wants less govt, and even then only certain portions

Please do point to one single instance of the right wing wanting less government at any point in the last 50 years, I’ll wait

The repeal of Obamacare attempt.
Every state that is doing private school voucher program.
Reducing the budget of the IRS yielding a 42% reductions in audits from 2010 to 2017.
Republicans defund, then claim that the whole thing was a waste of time.
Unless of coarse if we’re taking about military funding, or tax credits(see defund) for legacy corporations

You know, those are actually really good points. And “bleeding the beast” is one of my actively most hated tactics of theirs… Don’t know how I could have forgotten about that, tbh. There’s just so much horseshit to keep up with these days that I occasionally lose some in the pile I guess.

Killdozer

That was a citizen, not a politician, and therefore had no say in right-wing policy or size of government.
I don’t mean individual voters, I mean “the right” as a bloc, i.e. Republicans. Because they’ll tell you all day long that they pine for a smaller government, while signing off three bills increasing government presence at the Mexico border, or creating a new task force for illegalizing trans folks, before they even finish lying to you about it. And folks vote for them because of their lies.
I have other separate issues with them trying to destroy all the actually useful government entities such as the EPA and the FDA and the post office, but shit, at least that is faithful to what they claim their goals to be.
But for the entirety of my life the right wing has been clamoring constantly about “muh small government” while actively working to stick their governmental noses directly into every single person’s business. They’re liars and crooks. And events like the Killdozer Incident happen because of their lies and crookedness.

Not really, the difference between left and right seems to mostly be where they want the government’s focus to be. Left wants to primarily regulate business focusing on reducing harm and fair treatment for workers while allowing as much freedom of choice to the individual as possible. Right wants to primarily regulate individual behavior enforcing their religious and/or ethical standards while allowing business as much freedom as possible. This is of course a broad generalization and the entire political landscape in the US has been creeping right for decades.

I don’t even know anymore lol

You’re just saying libertarian in more words.
saltesc@lemmy.world 5 months ago
“American lib” is a very different thing to a libertarian. It confuses the hell out of the rest of the world when you lot do that. Suddenly the conversation flips randomly, “Oh, wait they mean American libs which are actually mostly anti-libertarianism.”
There are other words to describe what American libs are. Just because they think they’re libertarian, certainly doesn’t mean you call them that.
