What evolutionary purpose does it serve? I’m not a zoologist, but I’ve never seen an ape do that. (I know they don’t wear pants, but you get it… I hope? Lol)
I doubt you’ve ever seen chimps fight but the first thing they do is go for the genitalia and then eyes. And if you’re ever fighting someone with balls I highly recommend attacking the balls as it’s the easiest way to take us down. There’s probably a mechanism for making us feel comfy and safe when we have a hand on them protecting them

Primates are pretty obsessive about their junk generally.
