Honestly we still do this… japanese futons are the same parallel. We have a permanent bed in western bedrooms where the Japanese temporarily set theirs out and put it away in the morning. I could fit so much more stuff if i did that…

Sleeping on a futon on a tatami floor is really comfy, too. I find it great for my back (oddly enough).

The traditional reason most people do not sleep on the floor is to be suspended above the rats & cockroaches that come out at night.
