Oh man, I second EoS. It’s the best Pokémon game in my opinion. I’m quite surprised they haven’t remade it given that they remade Red Rescue Team.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I feel traumatized doing the professor oak challenge in that era… White 2, specifically, some 'mons are just extremely rare. I say this, fully anticipating doing a Silver/Gold run soon to buff my Gen V living dex.
Speaking of, I’m currently going after the 492 Pokemon in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky, which uses a living dex. Same era, I suggest you give it a go sometime-- it’s got quite a cult following for a reason.

I’m not sure I could make it through a challenge like that. Hell. I’m struggling to make it through the Johto Pokédex as is.
I’ll have to check out Explorers of The Sky. The only experience with Mystery Dungeon is my friend one time got my to try the switch Remaster of Rescue Team so I’m down to try one of my own
