At some stores they have an overhead camera with a computer that watches for you to pick something up and move it to the bag without there being a scan. At my local grocery store, I stopped using the self checkout because of how overzealous that system was.

I can’t see how that would work in practice.
What if you just don’t sit down your bag on the weighted area? When I buy more bulky items, like cat litter or toilet paper, I usually put them in the floor. Also my backpack already has stuff in, which i sometimes take and re-arrange while putting stuff in. Also what if you buy multiple items but only scan one and then use the number input to adjust the quantity?
Glad that we don’t have that shit. Just some scanner and a wooden shelf to put your bag.

Yeah no, you’re absolutely right, all the edge cases you’re talking about are exactly why this technology is annoying as shit and doesn’t work well in practice.

Well, we just don’t have any of those automated control systems and then it works quite well.
