The type of loss is important. The original version was Pa Kent dying from a heart attack or stroke or similar.
This teaches Clark the important lesson that despite all his power, there are people he cannot save. He decides to try anyway.
That scene teaches the exact opposite lesson. That having the power to save someone doesn’t mean you should.
Later in the movie Superman kills thousands of people in order to murder one guy.
