At this rate AI will cure it by having everyone die off of corporate greed and there being nobody left to have cancer.

Not because it’s smart or will figure it out on its own. It’s just a lot better at aggregating completely disparate pieces of information. A scientist researching in one field doesn’t hold the the whole body of knowledge of other fields. So it takes time to piece the bits together.
This is why discoveries are often made near simultaneously in different parts of the globe by different poorly. Just enough information gathered in just the right locations seen by people with the appropriate amount of knowledge.
With AI, that last bit gets faster and it will get the credit.

I think this is highly optimistic. I think AI helps researchers overcome skill gaps, analyze data and keep up to date with current research. But the current work needed to be done to solve the knowledge gap in protein and gene function is just to big. I think overall the problem is to complex, to individual to “cure cancer” as the phrase suggests. Its a helpful and maybe even powerful tool, but not the game changer altman and musk make it seem to be.
