The vehicle was seized under section 59 of the Police Reform Act, which was strengthened earlier this year to allow police to immediately confiscate a vehicle causing – or likely to cause – alarm, distress or annoyance to the public. Wow, what constitutes “likely to cause”? Sounds like overreach if I’ve ever heard it. All for taking it if you’re caught breaking the law, but likely to break the law sounds a little too minority report for me.

It’s normal language for UK laws. It’s to allow the police to stop someone doing something before they hurt someone rather than waiting until they do and then arresting them. In general we have a bit more trust in the police than the US - policing by consent rather than overwhelming force. Also why the police don’t usually carry guns.

Well likely to cause really means likely to do again since these laws usually target problem individuals with a history of law breaking.
All it does is save time, these idiots would get arrested anyway but now the police don’t have to sit a round the corner waiting for them to commit a crimes so they can arrest them.

I don’t agree with confiscation, but definitely give tickets when it’s warranted. As someone who has a muscle car that is loud, if you’re doing what you can to be respectful, then people can just be people and live together and not be Karens. If my neighbors went out of their way to make my life miserable, I’d return the favor, and that makes for shitty communities. I’d be on your side if I went out of my way to be an asshole.

So you have a loud car but also apparently been respectful? How can both things be true, either your bothering people at 8 o’clock in the morning with your loud car, or you have a normal car. You can’t have a loud car, but in a respectful manner, because by being overly loud and obnoxious, it is being disrespectful.

I only really notice them late at night, screaming around a residential road at 11pm is what matters.

I sympathise with your unease - it doesn’t seem ideal to allow the police such wide discretionary power, but we don’t live in the ideal world and the fact is there are plenty of arseholes who are not as gracious and accommodating to their local communities as you would be, if you were to choose to be one. These people *do* go out of their way to be arseholes, it’s how they show off to their mates. They deliberately push things as far as they can and they are a fucking nightmare to have as neighbours.
Back in the day, the police would have a quiet word with their fathers at the gentlemen’s club who would then threaten to cut them off - or, if they were working class oiks, they’d shove them in the back of the black Maria, beat them black and blue and drop them off outside town without their shoes.
Something needs to be done. Maybe that means allowing loud brash vehicles to be seized merely after a few complaints are made by the community that the police reasonably believe to be well-founded.
