Names evolve over time for a variety of reasons. The examples you provide aren’t also used as an insult the way turkey (the bird) is.
Recently there’s also Czechia, Eswantini, North Macedonia.

Deme@sopuli.xyz 4 days agoSure but I still don’t get why they did that. Germans aren’t going around insisting that their country be called Deutchland in english as well. Or Spain => España. Or Sweden => Sverige. Or Finland => Suomi. There’s so many examples I could plug here. Languages have different names for countries, no need to throw a fit about it.

A fair few doesn’t have a good pronunciation in other languages that those native speakers can reliably understand. That’s why we have localizations in the first place. Here in Sweden, Turkey (Turkiet) doesn’t sound like the bird (kalkon). It makes more sense to show the localized name and their internal name next to each other, and this is already common in many maps.

I mean, they just asked the UN to use that name. No one is required to use it, and I don’t recall it really being a fit
