Thats also why OS vendors shouldnt be able to restrict app stores to their own proprietary one. “Side loading” is essentially a corporatized definition on what should be a right… Smh.

This is why software downloads should be self hosted, instead of relying on third party distributors.

Won’t whoever shares the files still get a cease and desist?

This is what I’m running into trying to deGoogle, a lot of apps seem to just be on Google Play or a sketchy APK mirror site.

Aurora Store is good enough for most. It’s still on Google Play, but you’re not using the Google Play app and you can even pick which version and see an Exodus tracking report before you download.

I would recommend a different front end for fdroid repo like droidify, neo store etc. I haven’t used official fdroid app in ages but the 2 above are pretty good. Has many categories to choose from and search works fairly decent as well.

Neo store uses absurdly high amount of system resources. The app itself is laggy, and its quite heavy in background. Droidify is very lightweight compared to neo store.

I have F-Droid and it’s good. I tried Aurora Store but it didn’t seem to have a search function, just lists of a few apps from random categories. Almost reminded me of browsing Netflix.

It does have search

The easiest solution is to use open source alternatives, which can be downloaded directly from developer, use web version of the app, like i do with google documents, or pirate it if it is not available in your region of the store.

Yep eventually in the deGoogle quest you just reach a point where you’re like “Well I guess I’m just not using that app anymore. Time to hit up AlternativeTo.net”

They should at least have sideloading as an option
