For every thing there’s a critical mass of people below which it can be awesome, and above which it either collapses or requires so many rules and so much administration that it is no longer the cool thing it was before

The Fediverse doesn’t need to become wildly popular with billions of users, and if it ever does, that will probably end up ruining it somehow.

Definitely risks of enshittification if it grows more popular. The open web is decentralised, but that managed to get taken over by shitty walled gardens, and it’s possible similar things could happen. Or difficult to control spam like with email, where it becomes much harder to run independent/smaller hosts, and the larger players end up making the rules to suit themselves

I’m like 50/50 on this. I think it could use more users just cuz the content is a bit sparse, but I do hope it stays niche

For that, we need more people contributing content more consistently, but not necessarily more people, just more participation/fewer lurkers. Most places are like 90%+ lurkers though.

Honestly, I want it to become wildly popular with hundreds of millions of users, not billions

I just want it to bring down the Oligarchs.

I don’t think federated forums are going to be bringing down anybody, but you never know I guess.

I think we never will because money is extremely powerful…
