Plastic can be produced from renewable sources… we choose oil because its cheap and mostly a byproduct of the energy industry.

Ideally one would walk everywhere or take public transport, and in Europe at least a lot of people do...

But even then that's not always feasible - especially if you live in a country that has actively sabotage both those methods of transport - so making the cars they drive able to operate off of renewable energy (dependent on their source of electricity) is better than ranting like an old man and doing nothing
