I used to live in Japan. When I would go to a rural or off-the-beaten-parh izakaya, it was a coin flip. Either I would be told they are full (a lie, like this sign). Or the owner would be super excited to show a foreigner their culture and would personally serve me.
Comment on Cool Japan šø

Iāll be real - Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isnāt me being racist, Iām not even Japanese- but thereās a huge difference between these cities that LARP as traditional Japan to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely donāt have to. Itās a real shame how the culture has changed in Japan, and itās sad that most foreigners donāt realize that. So I donāt blame residents for recognizing that.

Iāll be real - Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isnāt me being racist, Iām not even from the South- but thereās a huge difference between these cities that LARP as Southern to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely donāt have to. Itās a real shame how the culture has changed in the South, and itās sad that most foreigners donāt realize that. So I donāt blame residents for recognizing that.
Weird how that sounds super racist now huh?

Ah, the gradient of āprotecting cultureā and āracismā
Boost@lemmy.world āØ1ā© āØhourā© ago
I draw the line when you start deliberately targeting people to exclude on the basis of their race or culture.
Also, preventing other people from experiencing a culture does not protect it.

Easy. You stop using āprotecting cultureā as a racist dog whistle. You protecting culture by preserving landmarks, education, helping families survive economically, having festivals and national support. You donāt do it by deliberately targeting people based on race or race-adjacent qualities. BTW most racism in the world has DECIMATED native culture. Including Japan, with the Ainu.

The only one that is relevant is Kyoto and New Orleans which both have cramped historical areas that can be an issue with too many tourists.

The point of this comment was not to draw a comparison between these 4 cities. I just picked 4 well known southern cities.

Holy shit screw off. Youāre straight up justifying racism and not even batting an eye.
