Holy shit screw off. Youâre straight up justifying racism and not even batting an eye.
Comment on Cool Japan đ¸

Iâll be real - Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isnât me being racist, Iâm not even Japanese- but thereâs a huge difference between these cities that LARP as traditional Japan to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely donât have to. Itâs a real shame how the culture has changed in Japan, and itâs sad that most foreigners donât realize that. So I donât blame residents for recognizing that.

I used to live in Japan. When I would go to a rural or off-the-beaten-parh izakaya, it was a coin flip. Either I would be told they are full (a lie, like this sign). Or the owner would be super excited to show a foreigner their culture and would personally serve me.

Iâll be real - Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston, etc are all flooded with tourists and immigrants. Now this isnât me being racist, Iâm not even from the South- but thereâs a huge difference between these cities that LARP as Southern to tourists and cities in the countryside that genuinely donât have to. Itâs a real shame how the culture has changed in the South, and itâs sad that most foreigners donât realize that. So I donât blame residents for recognizing that.
Weird how that sounds super racist now huh?

Ah, the gradient of âprotecting cultureâ and âracismâ
Boost@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I draw the line when you start deliberately targeting people to exclude on the basis of their race or culture.
Also, preventing other people from experiencing a culture does not protect it.
Poxlox@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
Easy. You stop using âprotecting cultureâ as a racist dog whistle. You protecting culture by preserving landmarks, education, helping families survive economically, having festivals and national support. You donât do it by deliberately targeting people based on race or race-adjacent qualities. BTW most racism in the world has DECIMATED native culture. Including Japan, with the Ainu.
GiantChickDicks@lemmy.ml â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
So, in order to protect culture you canât share it? Seems silly.
Einskjaldi@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The only one that is relevant is Kyoto and New Orleans which both have cramped historical areas that can be an issue with too many tourists.
Boost@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
The point of this comment was not to draw a comparison between these 4 cities. I just picked 4 well known southern cities.
Einskjaldi@lemmy.world â¨2⊠â¨weeks⊠ago
I know, but there is a real issue with small historical cities like with Venice where tourists can swamp a city that canât really handle it.
