This story is secondhand.

My brother’s first wife was Indian. As a result, he experienced many cuisines he wouldn’t have locally in the US. Apparently, she once took him to an Indian restaurant which offered a variety of spiciness levels; he, having been exposed to Indian cooking in the past, thought he could handle it. As such, he ordered the spiciest level of whatever he was eating.

The owner of the restaurant apparently came out and tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted. They prepared the food as requested and he ate it. At the end of the meal, his eyes and nose were running. Per his telling, the owner came out after he had finished it to ask how he had liked the meal. He said that he liked it but that it had topped out his spice tolerance.

According to him, the owner then responded “I thought so. That’s why I only gave you medium spice.”
