I feel itās funny precisely because of how it betrays your expectations with the setup. If it happened to you, outside of the comic, itād leave a sour taste but probably laughing a bit in a ādid that just happen?ā kind of way.

That isnāt the part thatās supposed to be funny, though. The joke is fundamentally about the linguistic ambiguity of āwould you like to danceā typically implying āwith meā. Itās something most people take for granted. So like, presented in a standup format the joke would be something like:
āHave you ever noticed that if someone asks you if youād like to dance⦠Theyāre not saying anything about dancing together? (Audience chuckles)ā
You could even structure the joke in such a way that it doesnāt involve someone being a jerk, maybe youād find that more palatable. E.g:
āSo anyways, one time at the club this gorgeous lady asks me if Iād like to dance. And Iām thinking, well, sure I guess. So I went up to the floor and started⦠(Comedian dances ridiculously, audience laughs). And when I look back at her she looks at me like I just killed her dog or something! (Audience in shambles) and thatās when I realized⦠Oh! You meant like⦠(Comedian points back and forth between himself and audience)ā¦together? Well why didnāt you just say so?! (Audience collectively dies from laughter)ā
If you couldnāt tell I donāt really like standup, lol. But the point is that the joke isnāt about misleading someone or being a jerk. Its fundamentally a language joke.

Thanks. I came to the fediverse hoping to find a less toxic environment and was already thinking i made an error. Yeah, having fun at other peoples expense isnāt very funny.

I cried when the clown beckoned for the student clown to come closer, expertly keeping the pie hidden behind his back. I tore my clothes and threw ash over my head when the student clown crafted a second pie unbeknownst to the head clown. Woe humanity, will this cycle of violence never end?
