Tesseract was an alternative frontend instances could host. Despite having configuration options for filtering or the lack thereof, Tesseract would silently both download and enforce a custom filter; this hidden filter could not be overridden by any custom configuration. The hidden filter included regex to block keywords, users, and instances, showing a generic error about anything filtered as being “incompatible with Tesseract”.

The words make sense.
If you don’t understand them, try looking them up.
Software is complicated and technical. You not being able to understand words does not make them nonsensical.

The frontend is the portion of a webserver you see. It’s the website after the server has done processing everything it needs to in the background.
Instances in this case means a webserver which is apart of the fediverse, more specifically one that uses the lemmy API in this case.
So tldr, a lemmy server could use tesseract in its code to have a prettier website displayed for users.
