  I’ll also note that there are a number of nurses that feel that they can’t actually make a difference because their days are spent running appeals against souless insurance companies or that anecdotally they just spend their time being yelled at by patients. I’ve also talked with teachers that have complained about sacrificing so much for the kids they teach only to have those very students abuse them or steal from them.

  These folks are definitely more likely to actually make a difference, but it is far from easy or rewarding most of the time.

  Well that’s a hypothetical situation and extremely unlikely to happen. So let’s not explore that. For an individual, you, or the OP and with the proper training it’s definitely not that hard to land a job that’s more meaningful.

  Of course different jobs require different training, but that is very doable as well, especially since the trading programmes for both of these jobs will have you working on the floor within a year or even a few months as an intern.

  And it gets even easier once you realize it is a choice between doing something you hate 8 hours per day for 40 or so more years vs. doing a fulfilling job and contributing to society, which requires a little effort. The biggest effort is putting yourself to doing it.

    You are still making some very big assumptions on how easy it is to drop a career and swap to a new one. Do people do it? Yes they do, but it’s not easy.

    Once you have things like a family, car payment, mortgage, etc. It can be really hard to restart.

    Also being a registered nurse takes 4 years plus certifications. Being a teacher varies wildly state to state.

    You are definitely approaching this from a mindset of being either just in college or early/no career and having low liabilities/commitments in life. Which if that’s where you are I encourage people in that stage of to seek out something rewarding. It only gets harder the long you wait in life and the more you develop the career you are in.

      And you are making assumptions on how hard it would be. People do it all the time. The hard part is breaking the habit and getting out of the comfort zone. And to stay in the comfort zone people throw up hurdles for themselves, making it seem harder than it is.

      Even you are trying to make it seem worse than it is, citing a four-year training when I just told you that during that training the trainee nurses are usually working on the floor in paid internships within a year.

      So like I said, the hard part is not the actual switch, but the mental process to start the switch, getting out of the groove that you’re stuck in and overcoming perceived barriers that you build up in your own mind.

      Anyway, what the OP said was that it would be hard finding a job that benefits society. And finding the job isn’t very hard once you’re trained.

        Once again being an RN is a 4 year degree. Are you thinking of LPN?
