Comment on 4 leaky tires on the same rental, overfilled to compensate

I had to get new pressure sensors for my old car and decided to roll new tires into it. A mile and a half out of the shop the light popped on and I pulled over to find out that the tech over pressurized one of the tires to 55psi and busted one of the new sensors

The VW ID.4 uses actual/expected rotational speed to calculate pressure.
No sensor to ruin there.

That honestly makes more sense. Mine had the sensors attached to the air valve which sync’d with the car wirelessly and they’d fail for any reason

I must admit I’m a bit of an VW fanboy, I just bought an ID.4 and is waiting for it be ready to drive home.
It is such a brilliant piece of engineering in so many ways, I am very impressed with what VW achieved with that car.
Goddam the driving of that car is excellent! 😀 😎

I guess my old car (from 2005) does the same thing. Has no tyre pressure sensors but gave me a tyre pressure fault on time. Turned out my rear left had a small leak. Error light came on at 1.6 bar (rears are supposed to be at 2.1-2.3)

Seems to me it did the job, maybe not as accurate, but it’s a way simpler system and less error prone.

Not nearly as accurate. It can only tell if one tire is going flat compared to the others. If all four are low, it can’t tell.
Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s true it’s not as accurate, but I think it can tell for more than 1, as long as it’s not in the wrong pattern.
Also if all 4 are going flat, there is either something seriously wrong or the user hasn’t checked tire pressure for a very long time, and you still need to do that.

About 8-9 years ago, I had a Mazda that used the same system for pressure which was great as I swap to winter tires for basically half the year. I was so disappointed when I switched to a newer one and found out they went back to using actual sensors.
I refuse to pay for a second set of sensors so now I just have a warning light all winter, I really wish they’d stuck to the rotational speed version.

The ABS sensor has been used for a while, i believe since the mk6 vws
Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I suppose that’s the thing that can measure the rotation with high enough accuracy, I didn’t even think of that.
So it’s based on a sensor that is already there! Very clever. 👍

The valve sensors are much more accurate, my mkV rabbit has them and they work much better than my mk7 gtis
