realcaseyrollins 2 years agoThey would probably use the AT protocol, or make their own, so that only Big Tech can use it. I couldn't imagine Twitter or FaceBook wanting to open their website to tiny passion projects hosted in European basements.

Ironically, given that some of these websites actually started with open source projects then embraced and extended them out of existence.
Google chat used to be xmpp compatible! Imagine that!

That's wild!
But, to be honest, I wouldn't be made about these Big Tech companies adopting FOSS tech and making their own, closed federated network. I don't know why we don't see more closed ActivityPub networks to be honest.
I actually advocated that as a solution to the age-old Twitter problem of having to serve multiple nations and adopt by the rules of different nations; if they split their userbase across multiple nation-specific instances, it could make it easier for Twitter to take appropriate and proportionate moderation actions.
