It won't happen, but it would be brilliant if all the big tech alternatives and twitter supported a universal protocol like ActivityPub so they could all communicate in an open ecosystem.

They would probably use the AT protocol, or make their own, so that only Big Tech can use it. I couldn't imagine Twitter or FaceBook wanting to open their website to tiny passion projects hosted in European basements.

Ironically, given that some of these websites actually started with open source projects then embraced and extended them out of existence.
Google chat used to be xmpp compatible! Imagine that!
