Comment on Members of public to be selected for ‘honest conversation’ about MPs’ pay

MP pay is such a red herring.
Yes, their pay is a lot compared to, say, minimum wage, but a low MP pay even further encourages only wealthy people to become MPs.
I’d much rather see MP salary significantly increased, but expenses capped and put under a much greater level of scrutiny.

I don’t think the amount of pay actually matters much - the worst of them make most of their money from other jobs as “consultants” and such. Pay them 100K a year and ban them from doing any other jobs.

Singapore recruit their government ministers globally and offer salaries into the millions of S$ - £600k-1.2m. Consequently they attract a high calibre.

I think it’s a fallacy to argue you have to pay more to attract top talent
The amount of times places then go on to select the worst candidate is astounding.
They need scrutiny and accountability so the electorate can rescind their choice.
The speaker should not come from MP stock either as that seat effectively has no representation, and no party stands in that seat.

The Speaker’s constituency gets excellent representation.
