Thatās weird - Ive not had that issue but I have to say I am often a bit lazy and donāt check. If itās not lining up it suggests the download was corrupted. I guess you have tried the download more then once?
If you tell em which distro I would be happy to go through the steps and download and share what I did in case thereās something you are doing wrong (not suggesting there is - I donāt know how much of a computer person you are). But I am travelling so canāt do it this week because I dont want to be downloading over mobile hotspot.

I know mint offers this on their website, but thatās more to make sure youāre not installing dodgy malware instead, say if you downloaded the image from a torrent or mirror instead of the actual site.
Itās not necessary but recommended. You could always try to install since itās on an old laptop you could wipe again if anything goes wrong.
Happy to help too if you need it

Iām going to double check. It looks like I went to linuxmint.com and chose Cinnamon.
And when the numbers didnāt match I tried mirrors (which claimed to be from reputable sources like universities and looked legit) to do the sha hashing steps on those too.
Seems in March someone on linux.org was talking about bad isos, Iāmma read through and see if he or she found a solution.

It looked like there was more to it with OP in that thread. Maybe even download Rufus and see if you can flash an iso onto your drive with that alright. You can trial Mint on your machine before doing the install to test it too
