Letâs say youâre at the supermarket; Is it against social norms to open a few punnets of strawberries and gather only the ripe ones to put in the punnet you eventually purchase?
Given they are sold as a pre-packaged item I think it would not just be against social norms, but could also be illegal. Especially if you have to break a seal to do it. Itâs like openeing a few bags of jelly snakes to consolidate the red ones because you donât like the mix.
Itâs not the same as the bag of grapes which are still weighed at checkout and just divided into bags for convenience.
I think itâs fine if you sort the non-ripe ones into their own punnets of similar ripeness at the same time, and arrange those punnets in order of ripeness such that is clear to other shoppers that what they are seeing is indeed punnets of strawberries arranged in ascending (or descending, I guess) order of ripeness.
I wouldnât open them if theyâre packaged in a punnet, feels wrong.
I do it grapes but I guess thatâs different because theyâre open bags. Not sure I would pick and mix strawberries, but ya know what, if I saw someone do it I wouldnât pay them any attention.
Only if you also leave a bonus needle in once in a while, anything else is simply un-Australian.
