My gosh, I donât get why people are so hung up about Acknowledgments of Country. Every single university class or meeting has had one. I donât see why itâs a big deal. It is just a statement that acknowledges that we are on Aboriginal land as a sign of respect. I can see how people see it as tokenistic, but I think a) it doesnât have to happen at every single gathering and b) it is the least we can do, considering many Aboriginal people had violent atrocities committed against them, and many communities are the way they are now because of things brought about by settler-colonials.

Broadly my feeling. Itâs used too often, especially the more wordy versions. Actual Ceremonial occasions like Graduation, absolutely. Every class just makes it into meaningless jibber. I could support plaques along the lines of public halls often having a Monarch portrait on display.

Iâve seen it used on in-work meetingsâŚthatâs just midnless performance at that point.

My old workplace did it for the big meetings, but there was one senior manager who would occasionally join our small group meetings and go through it. From him it definitely felt like cringey virtue signalling

Big meetings like town halls, sureâŚbut for a scrum itâs just bullshit
