Of course, compromise. I mean… To a degree. Some auteurs as, sigh, Kubrick let’s say, refuse to compromise, I believe the same thing went for Alfred Hitchcock and, fuck it, John Carpenter. There is something to be said for realism. Sometimes less is more. Most of the time that’s true at least half of the time I feel like.

Absolutely, getting a shower and having soap on your body is Magical Jesus Heaven when you’ve been in the dirt for a longer period of time, and it’s definitely an important morale motivator, actually just longing for it, so it definitely has survival value apart from basic hygiene making sure to let the body heal and not catch infections and so on…
I suppose the scope of the situation matters for what we are talking about. In a true survival situation, it’s an afterthought. In anything below that it becomes proportionally more accessible and pertinent, of course.

We don’t like to feel icky, for sure, but the scope for what we consider “icky” narrows a lot when we’re trying to survive.

There is a lot to be said for morale improving things like hot showers, clipping your nails, and all of that, but they are always luxuries (valuable luxuries), though they could certainly act as motivators. When you live under duress, you find that you can actually get used to very base forms of existence, over a long time.
