- Comment on Restaurant Bill 1 year ago:
That’s my point. This restaurant is try to bait and switch their customers by giving a misleading food price and adding a service charge. It is like a cell phone company adding garbage fees.
As for my initial comment - if you add a percentage for service, that ends my obligation to tip.
- Comment on Restaurant Bill 1 year ago:
If you charge me for service, I’m not paying extra for service.
Call it what it is - a junk fee so they can make their prices look lower than they are. I wouldn’t go to this restaurant a second time.

It is crazy. Stopped with my kid on a road trip - fast food burger, fries and soft drink was $15.
I go down town to a sit down restaurant and during happy hour I can get a restaurant burger, fries and a craft beer for $15.
- Comment on A few suggestions regarding banning 1 year ago:
Agree. I had a bot account banned, and despite the requirement that bot accounts have contact info, there was no attempt made to contact me. Regardless of whether or not the ban is justified, courtesy does not seem to be a priority for them.
- Comment on Are smart door locks more or less secure than traditional door locks? 1 year ago:
I have to disagree - this is more like the gate that blocks the sidewalk that you can get around by walking on the grass. The mechanical locks that these come with are significantly weaker, more common and better understood by thieves, that they wouldn’t bother even trying to figure out how to hack the smart lock.
- Comment on Opinions wanted: defederating with bot spam instances 1 year ago:
Perhaps it would be useful to look at the subscriber numbers for these communities? Maybe contact some of those subscribers directly, since they are the ones who requested the content in the first place? I would venture that people interested in a non-interactive firehose of links is probably a lurker and wouldn’t respond here.
If a lot of these communities have one subscriber, It could be that someone subscribed just to get the community on All.
I’m generally of the view that defederation to curate content is a bad idea. I’ve seen suggestions to have the ability for an instance to exclude certain communities from All, or maybe Lemmy needs a semi curated Popular feed like Reddit.

Yes

S2E1 was better than any episode of S1. They have really upped their game.
- Comment on Every single rising post on Reddit is crypto spam 1 year ago:
This is clearly the trend for Reddit- posts in general interest subs are frequently reposts by bots and commented on by bots that are karma farming so that they can post and upvote these scams.
The scary thing is that this would be easier to accomplish on Lemmy, we just aren’t big enough to be worth their time yet.

Yep - probably not safe to eat.
- Comment on 66% of Americans say they want extended European-style vacation policies at work 1 year ago:
It depends on the employer/ job. It became a thing in the 90s to put all time off in one pool for sick and vacation. It is a very US capitalist thing to use punishment & reward to modify behavior.
- Comment on 66% of Americans say they want extended European-style vacation policies at work 1 year ago:
US has PTO, it is just much less than Europe.
The reason there are people who don’t support it is because of conservative shame culture. If you aren’t rich, it is because you are lazy. They don’t want to take anything away from the rich because they earned it and deserve it. If that means the worker suffers, then the worker should just work harder so they can be rich too.

They confirmed it wasn’t defederation- it is something to do with CloudFlare.

I don’t think Apple feels compelled to grace “the rest of your subscription” when you are on a free trial.
- Comment on Did lemmy.world really defederate from the pirate instance? Totally unacceptable if so 1 year ago:
A fundamental weakness of Lemmy is that every instance has to mirror all the content it’s users have subscribed to. This means that each instance is hosting that content, and is legally liable for hosting it.
I can certainly understand why the admins would choose not to violate their country’s laws.
