On Futurama one of the popular phrases from the character zoidberg was something like "hey, look it's me your nephew" when he thought his uncle was rich. Don't recall the details, but just riffed on the meme.

- Comment on How do I stop hating children? 11 months ago:
I was unfamiliar with misophonia so I went looking into it. I know it is a poorly studied issue, but I wasn't able to find any peer reviewed research where children's noises in general were used or reported as a trigger. I found lots of discussion forums, but that is anecdotal.
The reason I went digging is because the op describes all children's noises, happy, sad, whatever, whereas what I read in the literature was very specific noises were reported as triggers. E.g, lip smacking, chewing, pen clicking, etc. In one study, they even used videos of children and dogs playing to help participants calm down and establish a baseline. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0227118
While I'm admittedly ignorant, it seems OP may have a more general aversion to children than I would expect of misophonia given what I've read from medical sources.
I only mention this as a counter suggestion to help op avoid self diagnosing and maybe going down the wrong track.
I think counseling is warranted to help sort it out.
- Comment on How do I stop hating children? 11 months ago:
I would echo the recommendation for counseling. However, is this a larger issue or unique to children? Do you find yourself getting disproportionately angry at other sources of annoyances? Answering that question might help you know whether there is a larger need to address.
- Comment on Why is alcohol measured in percentages? 11 months ago:
Yup.
We do lots of things as a society because we've always done them that way, or it's good enough, and not enough reason to go through the effort of changing everything including legal language, etc.
Happily, in this case I think ABV is about the best way we could have inherited, maybe only second to alcohol by weight in terms of consistency across temperature.
- Comment on Why is alcohol measured in percentages? 11 months ago:
In the US, and I suspect other countries, the agency that regulates alcohol is different than the one that regulates food. In the US alcohol is regulated by the ATF and food by the FDA. Since it is the FDA rules that require nutritional labels and ingredients and not the ATF, most brands don't list much.
Additionally, alcohol recipes are often considered trade secrets and closely held which might be why rules haven't been introduced in many places.
Here is an article that talks a little more about different breweries and if they keep their ingredients secret or not.
- Comment on Why is alcohol measured in percentages? 11 months ago:
Like I said, because the percent doesn't change with the volume served. If you are an 1800s brewer you can calculate the ABV from samples, and subsequently sell kegs of various sizes, bottles, which in turn can be served in various amounts and the percent doesn't change. And the industry never changed, nor the laws written. So it's the way it is because that is how they used to do it and how laws were written and there hadn't been a motivation for people to change that.
- Comment on Why is alcohol measured in percentages? 11 months ago:
I would guess about 4% heavier with sugar, which is just enough so that a can of Dr. Pepper sinks while a diet can of Dr. Pepper floats. I think I recall the specific gravity of most sugar flavored soda was around 1.04 but I would need to check sources.
- Comment on Why is alcohol measured in percentages? 11 months ago:
I haven't seen anyone really answer the why of it, which is that the industry developed using a floating glass tool called a hydrometer which measures the specific gravity, or density, of liquids.
When you boil the wort to prepare for fermentation, you end up with a sugary liquid that is denser than water or alcohol. Water has a specific gravity of one, and the specific gravity of the wort is increased by everything you dissolved into it. You would float a glass hydrometer in it and lets say you get a reading of 1.055.
After fermentation the yeast has converted much of the sugar to alcohol and decreased the specific gravity. You measure a second time, and multiply the difference by a constant factor to get ABV. let's say after fermentation you got a reading of 1.015.
1.055 - 1.015 = 0.04
0.04 * 131 = 5.24% ABVWe label with ABV because that was how it was calculated, and remained the same regardless of the quantity served.
There is a similar process for distilling as well. Before these methods people didn't know the exact amounts, which led to fun things like navy and admiral strength.

- Comment on Duo out here teaching me the essentials 1 year ago:
I've been using Duolingo to learn Spanish, and there are a lot of things I dislike about it. However, credit where credit is due, I don't have a huge drive to learn but rather I'm opportunistically learning as I have time for self improvements sake. And for that, Duo does an ok job of feeding me new lessons and slowly expanding my knowledge of the language in a few minutes a day, and it's free. After about three months I can go to a Mexican cafe, get a table, ask about the servers day, and chit chat about my kids, all in Spanish.
Which, if I'm being honest with myself, is more than I would have gotten self studying.

Everyone is different, and life is path dependent. Some people don't struggle with difficult memories, and others have simply not lived an unpleasant enough life to have accrued the emotional scars.
However, being blatantly brusque in your description of others followed by "sorry if I offended" is the epitome of ringing hollow. At least be honest; you don't care if you offended others.
- Comment on hmm 1 year ago:
Not all thoughts are consciously summoned, wanted, or pleasant. The term intrusive thoughts is a good way to describe those thoughts we find unpleasant. Yes, they are natural and normal, and often how we grapple with and process experiences, but that doesn't make them unobtrusive.
Additionally, many people have intrusive recollections of upsetting events from the past. Intrusive thoughts is a good descriptor that helps avoid over using terms like flashbacks or PTSD.
Clarifying such things as intrusive helps destigmatize these thoughts for people who have them and feel the weight of social expectations, like new parents as in the comic. I feeling guilty about having these thoughts isn't healthy, and properly describing them helps people prices them. I don't see what is particularly objectionable or hard to understand about the term and why being more specific in the description of one thoughts is off-putting to you.

Sometimes "I don't know" is the only correct response yet one so few are willing to give. Kudos.
- Comment on Honest question: what was Hamas' long-game with respect to kidnapping Israelis? Did they think Israel would just negotiate rather than retaliate? 1 year ago:
I think even worse than the expectation of instant knowledge is the expectation that everyone must pick a side and must do it now. There are dozens of conflicts around the world with atrocities being committed, but this is the only one you consistently get called out for not picking a side.
I think it's healthy for people outside of the conflict to ultimately feel one side has more or less justification, while still acknowledging their faults and mistakes.
- Comment on Honest question: what was Hamas' long-game with respect to kidnapping Israelis? Did they think Israel would just negotiate rather than retaliate? 1 year ago:
So the history of Israel and it's neighbors is looking and complex. A short summary might be that when Israel was formed none of its neighbors recognized it as a state and invaded. Over the years there has been significant conflict, with wrongs perpetuated on both sides. Eventually Egypt and the Jordan officially recognized Israel as a state and began a long period of normalization of relations between the two.
The remaining neighbors, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank are more complicated. Gaza elected Hamas who has sworn to destroy Israel. West Bank and the Palestinian authority has negotiated over the years with Israel, and on my opinion been treated poorly. Syria and Lebanon (with Hezbollah) still refuse to acknowledge Israel as a state and vow to fight it until it's destruction.
Behind all of this is Iran, who funds and coordinates training and resources for the basis Arab groups signed against Israel. The ongoing terrorist activity in the region makes it almost impossible for a true negotiation to occur and a transfer of stewardship of the three districts in the West Bank to full Palestinian governance.
So why does Hamas invade and take hostages? Because they have seen ongoing efforts to normalize relations between Arab countries and Israel, including with Saudi Arabia, and that is exactly what they don't want. Remember, they only exist to destroy Israel. That is their entire governance platform. By provoking Israel to invade, it creates unrest in the region, staining relations between Arab leaders and Israel. Which is what Hamas wants.
The take away should be that religious ethnic states are a humanitarian and diplomatic mess. There are no easy answers or solutions when the platform of one country is that the other country must cease to exist. Likewise, Israel just can't get out of its own way with respect to exacerbating tensions via settlers in the West Bank and occupation of the Golan heights. Though to be fair, the Golan heights were captured, like the West Bank, after the countries who controlled them attacked Israel in the six day war.
So to answer your question, yes, this is all playing out like someone wanted. That someone is Hamas.
- Comment on Does anyone drink instant coffee anymore? 1 year ago:
I do occasionally. I'm mindful of my caffeine intake, so if I really want a hot beverage and herbal tea doesn't cut it I can make up a light cup of coffee, or a mix of coffee and cocoa. I usually do this after I've had my coffee for the day or when I'm planning on having my regular coffee later than normal.

Washington State changed the minimum wage and mandated it to include tipped workers. It didn't really change the tipping, but the tips still went to the staff, so at least the workers got a more livable income out of the deal.

Joking aside, diablo 3 was the last game I ever pre-ordered. They basically made a wow clone in the Diablo universe, but without a compelling story. They must be desperate for sales if they are diversifying where they sell it.

Maybe try kbin.social? I've found the PWA app to work reasonably well, you still see fediverse content, and the system is more reddit like. You do need to pick and choose which threads you want in to still, because you are right, there are a lot of FOSS, Linux, and other types of absolutists that ruin discussions.

They had a bug where if you were denied it was supposed to send a notification with a link allowing you to elaborate, but those notices didn't go out. Then, when you've applied but gotten stuck in the unapproved state, your user account exists but is disabled, this you can't make a new account with that same name. Sort of a sucky situation all around.
