It’s the 24h news cycle. Most news sources are battling for your attention/clicks every day and if they keep digging into a story that people already know, they’ll get less clicks. It has to be new or it just gets scrolled past. This isn’t unique to america. It’s everywhere. Even here on lemmy.
Steve Bannon has recognized this and weaponized it for Trump with his ‘flood the zone’ approach. Keep blasting new headlines and nothing will really stick.

I used to play WoW 5v5 arena competitively in 2007. This was way before they went hard on e-sports so it’s not really comparable to today. Just to give you some perspective, the winning team at blizzcon got $25k which meant $5k each which (again, only in case of winning the world championship) would’ve just so covered my travel costs.
Honestly it was terrible. At first I used to play for fun and only accidentally ended up in a top team. Then my team got way too ambitious and it became more of a chore. I told them early on that I had no interest in playing like that but they couldn’t find a replacement so I kept playing with them until I was fully burned out. It was nice being good at something but it ruined the fun of it.

Also parental controls are ass. Yes you can block (most) pornography but you can’t tell a social media app to not blast a teenager with misinformation. It’s like a playground but with glass shards everywhere. You can forbid the kid from playing there altogether but they’d feel excluded while all their friends are having fun. Somehow there doesn’t seem to be an option to remove the fucking shards though.

It do be like that. Many of them get repeated till they reach a critical point and everyone is sick of them. Some of them are harder to tolerate than others though. I can deal with people ‘checking notes’ here and there but those who use “literally” as every second word in their sentences awaken a primal rage inside of me that is yearning for rock to split skull. Luckily that trend isn’t as prevalent as it used to be back in the day.

Many people who have been in abusive work situations know that there’s a point when you should leave but the constant drain from the abuse keeps you in a state of exhaustion that prevents any action. It’s often only once this makes you so physically sick that you have to take the time off and realize this can’t go on any longer.
I believe this is the zone where Amazon wants to keep their employees. Fully exhausted, given up on any possible improvement.
If you find yourself in a situation like this, run like fuck.
