Pssh, you guys are still on gravity-fusion? My ship has magnetically-bottled antihydrogen, which is carefully fed into a specialized reaction vessel that annihilates it with ordinary hydrogen to produce incredible amounts of heat…
…which is then used to boil water and force the steam through a turbine.

Huh, I didn’t realize the numbers worked out that well.
I think there’s still a raw-materials issue. Extraction and transport for that much solar is doable but still a big disadvantage.

I still think nuclear (probably fission rather than fusion) has a place, at least in terms of land usage. It’s just obscenely efficient in terms of energy per resource investment. It requires many square miles and hundreds of tons of materials to match the output of a single reactor.

Turns out heat engines are like… pretty good at turning arbitrary energy sources into useful work.

I mean, you could argue that “spend less time in enemy territory” counts for this.

Actually, it turns out the best strategy is to strip the plane’s armor - light planes need less fuel, which makes them even lighter, and that makes them faster. Fast planes spend less time in enemy airspace and are harder to hit.
