Definitely a cool razor!
- Comment on How to correctly use Nagura stones? 1 week ago:
I only have a Coticule with a slurry stone so it’s probably not the same. Mine doesn’t really scratch. I think using the edge of the stone is a bit more dangerous in terms of scratching. If the slurry stone has scratches it can scratch the base stone so definitely put that one also on the diamond plate. With the diamond plate you can make sure both are flat, if one is not flat it will scratch the other one.
Otherwise, do you like the La Lune? I was thinking about it but I went the safe route with a synthetic finishing stone. My Coticule doesn’t really finish.

I don’t usually look at the edge to decide on a refresh. Last time I had put a new edge on it with new stones but it didn’t erase all the old scratches so I redid it. I think they were diamond scratches still left from when I had restored the blade. I do know about the packing peanuts but I don’t have them. I usually try the hanging hair test.

2025-11-13
- razor: Koraat Wedge
- progression: Shapton glass 3k -> glass 8k (HC) -> glass seven 0.85 micron -> pasted strop -> rough leather -> denim -> fine leather
- brush: 4 euro brush
- lather: De Vergulde Hand origineel
- post shave: Nivea after shave balm sensitive
Quite a good shave, pretty smooth, almost no blood and low irritation. I refreshed the Koraat edge as the scratch pattern didn’t look so good. It is much better now but I can still push it a bit I think. The edge survived quite well today. I think I managed a better shaving angle especially under the chin (I went a bit steep there before). Every shave there is something learn or to pay extra attention to.

Thanks for the big write up! The first point sounds so logical so it’s surprising that I did manage a smooth shave out of the Koraat with its much thicker bevel. I’ll try to go without tape in the future or at least try reducing it to a single layer and see how that goes again.
For the second point, I’ll take your suggestion and pay more attention to the shaving angle!
The money is a bit tight so I’ll have to figure it out on my own I’m afraid. That is also why it is good to hear that my progression is fine. I watched that JPO video where he goes over weakness in the steel from making large jumps in grit so I was afraid I needed something in between 3k and 8k. I’ll just practice some more.

Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. With 0.85 I mean the Shapton Glass Seven 0.85 micron stone. The 8k is about 1.8 micron and their 16k is 0.92 micron so this one would be 16k+ rated. But they don’t rate their “seven” stones with a K number.

I bought the cheapest soap and brush. It’s fine. I had a bad shave today though. There was a lot of irritation and blood spots. I didn’t chase the super close shave to save my face. I had bought new stones and honed and it looked good: all scratches went out each step and it did the hanging hair test. Still my edge gets ruined extremely quickly in the shave. I already use two layers of tape to make it stronger and the steel is fresh. I thought my edge broke down because of my bad lower grit stones didn’t set the bevel correctly. So I bought the shapton glass 3k but it didn’t help enough. I also honed my Koraat the same way and then used my mystery natural stone but it didn’t turn out well: still big scratches left, didn’t do the hanging hair test at all and felt not keen to my finger skin. But when I shaved with it, while lacking sharpness it was smooth and my skin was fine and I didn’t have any blood at all… So I am very confused!

Extra hollow kamisori? Western style or a nihon kamisori but hollow?

My first edge didn’t get half the blade. Getting the tape even was very difficult. At last I had more success without tape. I still might try tape the next time. I had 3 days of growth which gives me a lot to chop through. The wedge feels much different than a hollow. Managing the pressure needs some getting used to. I spend to much time trying to chase bbs but some spots weren’t perfect after all. Pretty good shave and no cuts. I like the after shave, I stingily got two of them in a 1 + 1 free deal.

Interesting to hear about the vintage blade and the cost per shave. Kind of reminds me of vintage dip pen nibs. They also wear out and the vintage ones can be much more expensive than new ones.

I never understood how people can get away with so many shaves on a DE blade! My facial hair is like the tail of a black pig, like bristles. Maybe that’s why. I have a 2 day stubble and my chin feels like I could use it to sand down wood. I understand preshave and lather can extend the life of the blade but 100 is crazy. Do you strop the DE blade?

Thank you. I am new indeed. As for the soap:
- I just randomly started trying to use the razor. I didn’t buy all the things at once but slowly added things to make it work. Soap just wasn’t in line yet. I used to try to shave of an 3k edge on a razor with bad geometry honed on non-flat stones with no strop. It’s a miracle it even kind of worked. So things like a diamond plate, a 8k stone and a strop were of higher priority to me.
- I have a lot of lines to get straight, like my sideburns and my beard so I need to see what I’m doing.
- It costs money and my shaving budged is getting a bit low so I need to pick my poison.
- I’m a minimalist in the weirdest ways sometimes.
- I had a lot of trouble with my edge, so I honed a lot and tried a lot of edges. Just water gives the most direct feedback of the edge on the skin. If it’s fine with water it will be fine with any soap or oil.
- If my fundamentals (edge and technique) are solid I might add things like shaving soap or oil in the future.
- It’s quick. I watched a bunch of shaving videos and the lathering up part often takes up more than half of video.
I don’t think I will post often here as I only have one razor, no soaps and two basic aftershaves. So it’s not exactly the most exciting SOTD 😅

- Razor: MERX & Co. Solingen-Wald Gamerx
- Lather: just warm water :)
- Post Shave: Kruidvat Aftershave Balm Sensitive
Still struggling with my edge a bit but I found out 2 layers of tape is best. 0 and 1 didn’t hold the edge at all and 3 layers seemed to much, didn’t take one to begin with. Progression is 8k > 1.5 micron strop > 0.6 micron strop. And yes I just soften my face with warm water and go, for various reasons. I just slap some on there with a washing cloth on each part before I shave there.
Decent shave, not much irritation at all today. I went against the grain immediately on the neck, felt good. Somehow that saves me irritation because I take less passes in total (I think). Went against/across the grain on the chin immediately as an experiment. Totally doable but I made a small error and cut myself. Skill issue. Looks like it would hurt but it doesn’t.
