- Comment on When a place is called " Heights", what does "heights" mean/refer to? 11 months ago:
That’s generally how it’s used in Australia. There will be an existing suburb named ‘generic suburb’, and developers will come and build a new housing development full of cookie cutter houses on 300m2 blocks with their gutters near touching eachother and call it ‘generic suburb heights’ as an attempt to give the schmucks that buy there some sort of feeling of prestige over the older neighbourhood with larger block sizes and more human compatible dwellings.
Other guy in here nailed it with the British origins but for some reason he’s been downvoted.

Sorry about the grainy, difficult to read image. I am on mobile and couldn’t find a better version right now.
I think you might have misunderstood one of the primary internet rules “There are no girls on the internet.”
If you squint, you’ll work it out.

Is anyone actually paying for it though?
Don’t get me wrong, actual journalists deserve a great wage. I just haven’t seen much of it worth paying for in recent years. Real journalists get locked up and it looks like the rest took that threat very seriously. I’m not going to pay money to read corporate puff pieces and controlled opposition.

I can’t imagine it’s a Tesla or it wouldn’t say anything about keeping the engine running.
Either way, fuck all this bullshit. Every day I grow less and less likely to part with my old beast BUT the near doubled and still rising price of fuel will probably force my hand eventually.
I just went on a touring holiday and fuel was easily the largest component of my budget.

- Comment on Professor explains why Russia is rooting for Trump | Russian Media Monitor 1 year ago:
Australia. I don’t have a TV so most of my exposure to US politics is from various internet sources and podcasts.
I could be wildly wrong but it does seem there’s growing sentiment that your major political factions just don’t share enough common ground to work together any longer.
- Comment on Professor explains why Russia is rooting for Trump | Russian Media Monitor 1 year ago:
I don’t understand a great deal about state’s rights or the US constitution but from the other side of the globe this Russian seems to be making a lot of sense.
Seems USA is nowhere near healing the division already seeded by Trump.
I don’t think they’re close enough to having the conviction for a civil war but the values of states like Texas and Florida seem largely unrepresented in Washington to the point that with the right kind of insanity at the helm I could see them secede or at least try to.
That massive wave of migration to Texas really does seem like a rejection of the entire direction of the country.

It’s fucking gross.
I’ve no idea how they convince themselves they’re going to get away with this sort of shit.
If that is their thing, I’m sure they could find any number of people willing to play around with consensual non consent instead of destroying someone.

Why has a Hollywood celeb gotta be out there raping? Why? I just don’t understand.
- Comment on Nord VPN tv commercials are incredibly misleading 1 year ago:
Using a VPN generally increases your latency. Latency is…bad. They are advertising a negative consequence as a positive feature, banking on the target market not having enough understanding of the terms in play.
Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You might understand it better but the frog is dead.

If you are hosting a discussion forum on a server that you are responsible for, does that automatically make you responsible for the content that people post on it? Even an instance the size of dbzer0 is impossible for a single person to moderate all of the content from the many communities that are federated with it. Impossible.
That’s like saying the admin of lemmy.world holds all of the wild political opinions that are posted on there.
- Comment on What do all the people do in rural area towns and unincorporated areas? 1 year ago:
Is forestry happening in the area? A few thousand hectares of well managed forest creates hundreds of jobs. A couple of timber mills and all the labour that powers them, mechanics and saw doctors for those.
Trucks to haul the lumber, machines and operators to cut and extract it, and the mechanics for those. Machines to prepare the site for replanting and the operators and mechanics for those. Ground crews to plant trees. Foresters to manage the forest and all of the beaurocracy and hierarchy that comes with that. Fire management crew, science and research crews, plot measurers, tree markers…
Then you need another whole industry to keep this small army plied with booze and food.
- Comment on Big Tobacco knew radioactive Po210 in cigarettes posed cancer risk, kept quiet 1 year ago:
This is a seperate issue on top of the injurious effects of smoking. The point is that tobacco companies were well aware that their continued use of phosphate based fertilizers high in radium was resulting in radioactivity in the end product.
They were also acutely aware that this radiation would contribute to cancer over time. There are simple methods by which this could have been avoided but they were concerned it would reduce the addictiveness of their products.
They killed people on purpose. That’s pretty messed up.
Tobacco is a plant that happens to be highly effective at uptake and storage of heavy metals from the soil. You have to be super careful how and where you grow it, and with what fertilizer.
