I thought that the US banned flavored vapes. If your home country has not, encourage politicians to ban vapes altogether.
- Comment on Does the USA have gifted schools or was Spider-Man Homecoming lying? 3 days ago:
A magnet school is just a school that will take students from anywhere in the district instead of only students that live nearby. Some require tests to attend, but others do not.
But yes, there are public schools for gifted students that admit purely based on academic merit and exam scores. In theory, a rich student would not be able to buy their way in. In practice, having a tutor who can coach a child on exam specifics is a very large advantage.
- Comment on BREAKING: Bernie Sanders just introduced the Guaranteed Paid Vacation Act — a bill to guarantee at least two weeks of paid vacation to every full-time worker in America. Over 90 other members of Cong… 1 week ago:
I am all for it, though I worry that employers will start treating 10 days as both a minimum and a maximum (for regular employees). I expect that the most American workers gets 10 days or less, so this law is going to be good for them and the CEOs who get 52 weeks off per year are going to keep getting that, but there are high-skilled workers who take 3-4 weeks off per year. Their employer is going to standardize on 2 weeks of per year for everyone from the janitor up to the vice president. If the employee tries looking for a job, many companies will have already switched to the 10 day standard and the rest will either follow suit, calling it “matching industry norms”, or they will use the extra vacation days as golden handcuffs.
I hope not, but I am a pessimist.
- Comment on 'Locking a gameplay trailer behind a Netflix subscription is a new level of greed' — GTA 6 callout Rockstar for 'paywalling' the game's extended look 1 week ago:
This is GTA 6. The game could just be Hello World and it would still be the best selling game ever. They could have started taking preorders earlier and it could have also been the best selling game of last year.
People know how popular the last game was, assume that this one is going to be even more, and feel like they need to be first to play it or they will be left behind. They feel like they need to preorder the game so that it doesn’t sell out, despite the fact that it is a digital download.
- Comment on Why do seemingly well-adjusted adults find it acceptable to loudly play tiktoks on public transport? 1 week ago:
I love using my phone speaker. I do not always have headphones in my ears. I know some people can walk around all day with an earbud in their head, but I am not one of them. When I am messing around on my phone and decide I need to watch a video that includes audio, I can just turn up my speaker and listen. At home only, mind you. I would have to be totally devoid of empathy to blast loud audio in public.
- Comment on Another Clippers-Kawhi side deal 2 weeks ago:
I did not watch the video but I am guessing it is the same as this article: espn.com/…/report-leonard-had-undisclosed-sponsor…
TL;DR: Allegedly, Kawai was sponsored by Daktronics, the company that made the scoreboard for the Intuit Dome.
- Comment on Could I theoretically grind up one of those pink salt lamps and use it to season my food? 2 weeks ago:
Since this is “no stupid questions”, I will follow up with a question and demand that you not call me stupid: what about the lamp makes it “not food grade”? I assume that both salts are just NaCl, so do salt manufacturers put the salt through some process to remove dangerous contaminants or something?
- Comment on Would you rather be reincarnated into a world of magic or reborn as yourself (with your current knowledge fully intact)? 2 weeks ago:
I would never choose to be reborn as myself with my current knowledge. I would know how my life could turn out without knowing all the steps I did to get there. I don’t think I would be able to get my wife to fall in love with me and I know that I would never be able to find the exact breeder that sold me my dog.
Sure I would be able to see loved ones who have passed, but would I be able to enjoy that extra time knowing that they will soon develop a disease that will kill them?
As much as I would love to imagine how much better my life will be if I made the right decision at some juncture, I would not want to lose out on all the treasure I discovered taking the wrong road.

The only part of my hair grooming that is “for myself” is trimming my mustache so food does not get caught in it.
Everything else is is for looks and other people look at me much more often than I look at myself. Even when I see myself in a mirror, I try to see myself as others would see me. My wife is the person that looks at me the most and is the person whose opinion is most important to me, so I ask for her opinion about how I groom myself.
- Comment on LeBron chooses 76ers, will sign 2-year, $8 million contract 3 weeks ago:
I assume the plan with Embid is that the team should not need him until the playoffs. During the regular season, he can play light minutes and take frequent rest days, just enough to keep him in shape and maintain chemistry.
- Comment on LeBron chooses 76ers, will sign 2-year, $8 million contract 3 weeks ago:
I assume he is chasing one more ring.

George’s contract is a year shorter.
- Comment on LeBron James says he will play with the Philadelphia 76ers next season 3 weeks ago:
You missed some headlines. The Sixers traded the broken Paul George for Jaylen Brown.
It seems that the new Celtics ownership is operating on the idea that the second apron will become a de facto hard cap for NBA payrolls and that existing contracts are not providing a good enough value. On his own last year, Brown was earning his max contract, but apparently having both Brown and Tatum on the court together is not worth paying 2 max contracts.
Other teams seem to be agreeing with them about the second apron being mutually assured destruction, but it could all be cover to force players to take less money.

- Comment on The Celtics are trading Brown to the 76ers 1 month ago:
The Pacers? They tanked last year but are bringing back most of the roster that made the finals in 2025.
- Comment on The Celtics are trading Brown to the 76ers 1 month ago:
And that is that for the Celtics.
Seriously, why would they make that trade? Brown is, arguably, the best player on the team (and until Tatum fully recovers, there is no argument). The only reason to dump him for picks is if the team is going for a radical rebuild, except they signed Robinson to a fairly big deal.
I assume the owners do not want to pay for two max contracts. If they don’t want to pay, they are not going to be able to seriously compete.
Or maybe Brown told the team he wanted out and this is the best offer they could find.
- Comment on Poll: Will you buy GTA 6 when it launches on your platform? 1 month ago:
The poll does not break down if people are not buying it because they object to some aspect of the release or they are not buying it because the game does not appeal to them. It makes it sound like there is a large boycott of the game when it could just be GTA indifferents (like me) stuffing the ballot box.
- Comment on Reports: Wolves land LaMelo Ball in blockbuster trade with Hornets | NBA.com 1 month ago:
The picks that the Hornets are getting are 2033 unprotected first-round pick, pick swaps in 2028, ’29 and ’30 and three second-round picks (’29, ’32 and ’33).
- Comment on Sources: Bulls finalizing hire of Tiago Splitter as head coach 2 months ago:
Splitter was not the Portland head coach, he was the acting head coach until they can hire a permanent coach. He might have been one of their top candidates, but it did not stop Splitter from interviewing for other HC opportunities. The Bulls must have made an offer first or made a better offer.
- Comment on Has anyone else noticed the strong pro CCP and anti-west vibes here? 2 months ago:
From what I understand, the devs are not injecting their political views into the Lemmy code. That does not mean they have not had a pro-tankie influence on the Lemmy community. As the original developers, they also set up the first major instance, lemmy.ml and they moderate that instance to have a tankie lean. Since it was the first instance, many people created their first account for it and it was the de facto standard place to start communities. As far as I know, it is still one of the most active instances.
- Comment on Amazon Just ERASED Your Library. You Have 90 Days. 2 months ago:
Some times. Officially, all games on Steam include DRM and are supposed to run except if launched from the Steam launcher. Some developers do not bother getting that DRM working correctly.
- Comment on NBA Approves New 3-2-1 Draft Odds 2 months ago:
I still don’t understand why the bottom three teams have worse odds than teams 4-10 from the bottom. Is it a measure to insure that teams that tank only tank a little bit? Even with flat odds for the bottom 10, there is no reason for a team not to start winning once they are out of the play-in. They would want to since it is more interesting for fans and helps with player development.

Used Decks were priced very far above MSRP on Facebook Marketplace a couple weeks ago. I assume that means that the demand is there.
- Comment on How come people get fined for breaking the law and it goes to the state or county? Why doesn't the fine go to the victim or victims? Instead of having to pay restitution just fine them. 2 months ago:
From the one law class I took in college, civil courts are for one person to get reputations from another. Criminal courts are for society to get respirations from a person. A criminal fine is about paying back society because your lack of following the law is making people around you feel unsafe.
The victim of your crime can sue you independently and get additional money from you. I believe they can even use the evidence from the criminal trial and a civil trial is much easier to win.
- Comment on PS5 console sales drop 30% in April after price increase, while Switch 2 dominates 2 months ago:
Handheld computers are competition to the PlayStation in the sense that Sony would want everyone who owns one to buy a PS5 instead but not in the sense that those consumers having an option is hurting sales significantly. I could not find actual numbers, but analysts seem to be estimating that Valve has sold about 6 million Steam Decks in total. For comparison, Sony sold 1.5 million PS5s last quarter, which is devastating since they sold 2.8 million the year before.
Also, that sales gap is going to get worse in the short term. Instead of raising Steam Deck prices or reducing profit margins, Valve has decided to stop selling systems until RAM prices come back down.
- Comment on Jason Kidd out as Mavericks coach after five seasons 2 months ago:
Good riddance. I don’t think I have ever seen a positive news article about him as a person. As a coach, his career highlights seem to be developing Gianis and Luka but never having much team success. I am not saying team owners are overtly racist, but I wonder if he would have had as many coaching opportunities if he was black.
- Comment on What character is the king of plot armor? 2 months ago:
Bink from the Xanth novels. He is a magician who jahcndustbdrmicyd vjsybfkauchd auchwnzkhfmaicybfkaubd w

He has a magical ability that prevents him from suffering harm by conjuring impossible coincidences. It also prevents anyone from being told about the nature of the ability or discovering it via magical means.
Also, I am pretty sure he becomes the King of Xanth in one of the later books.

You missed the joke. Obviously, a man is only going to have 0 or (rarely) 1 woman interested in him, but the woman is assuming that he is talking to many women, which is physically impossible.
- Comment on Honestly impressive how pharmacies are able to find a new type of problem every time I go to pick up my meds 3 months ago:
With prescriptions, it is not about what the customer wants, it is about what brands the insurance wants to cover (and getting a doctor that does not write a brand specific prescription). If an insurance company only covers a weird brand of a common (but expensive) medicine, the customer either has to hunt for a pharmacy that has it in stock, wait for their local pharmacy to order it (in either case delaying when the insurance company has to pay for it), or buy the in-stock brand without any insurance coverage. The insurance can still claim they cover the drug while paying less for it.
At one point, I was on a medicine that had a very high co-pay for the brand name and would not cover the generic. It was so high that it was cheaper for me to buy the generic uninsured instead of paying the co-pay.
