The darkly funny thing about this, is that he's saying this because there's an election coming up.
Clearly thinsk this'll be a vote winner with their electorate.
- Comment on [deleted] 7 months ago:
It's obvious everywhere. If anything it's often worse in the fediverse, because communities are smaller and extremists are more able to dominate the discussion.
- Comment on [deleted] 7 months ago:
There may not be a lemmy rule against it, but damaging someone's reputation with false accusations is libel.
- Comment on [deleted] 7 months ago:
- Get banned for a made-up reason X in publicly viewable modlog, without right of reply or recourse.
- Get doxxed and username tied to your real world name.
- Doxxers send screenshot of you being banned for X to employer.
- Employer fires you for irresponsible use of social media.
- Sue for libel and damages (lost revenue from prematurely terminated employment). Chance of winning probably zero, but a bored no win no fee lawyer, or someone with too much time/money won't care about that.
All quite implausible, but why anyone would take the risk when a generic reason will suffice or simple insult would suffice is beyond me.
- Comment on [deleted] 7 months ago:
Here's the thing: no one's going to do anything about it, but technically this may amount to libel.
On reddit you're banned via private message, so no one knows why you'd been banned, even if the reason is bogus. If someone accuses you of something in a comment, you can defend yourself. You have the right to reply. But in the fediverse you're banned and if the mod does it for a made-up reason, that false reason is publicly viewable in the modlog without you being able to do anything about it. They've maliciously damaged your reputation without any recourse, right to defend yourself / right of reply.
Now imagine at one point their username is linked to their actual name. An employer does a google, finds they've been banned for homophobia. Some arsehole doxxes them, and sends a picture of their being banned for homophobia to their employer. They're fired for allegedly being homophobic on social media. At that point, a good lawyer could potentially prove libel and damages caused. You're clearly annoyed OP. Now imagine someone with too much time and money on his hands.
It's real amateur hour shit. Sure being sued for libel is incredibly unlikely, but there are only downsides to not erring on the side of caution with stuff like this. Want to ban someone? Make up a generic or non-defamatory reason, or simply call them a dickhead, and go on with your day.
Stuff like this, the failure to respect GDPR/Privacy and NetzDG laws, a failure to properly deal with CSAM material... it's a ticking time bomb under the whole fediverse.

Square covers like this are common globally, including in the US.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:

- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
It's next to a drainpipe...
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
99% a cover for an inspection hole for the nearby drainpipe.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
Depends. The cover is resting on the inside lip which prevents moisture getting in. Ie. this cover is actually significantly bigger than the hole it's covering.
Eg. if this cover is 25x25, but it's covering a hole which is less than 18x18 (c=25.5), it'll be quite hard to drop the cover in.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
The cover is resting on the inside lip that's smaller than the outside lip, prevents moisture getting in, and probably small enough that this won't actually fall in easily if at all. Something like this:
-----II-- --II-------
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
It’s really strange that it’s square and not round.
It's not even slightly strange. These are incredibly common all across Europe and presumably the world.
The chance of it falling in the hole is zero unless you're trying to do it on purpose. Lift and slide, done.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
I've worked in construction and renovations for years and do all my maintenance.
99% chance it's to service the nearby drainpipe.
As you say, it won't be particularly big.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 7 months ago:
- Manhole covers are not heavy as fuck. They're meant to be able to lift out. I've lifted far larger ones than this no problem.
- This manhole cover is at most 30x30cm judging by OP's foot, so weights at most a few kilos.
- This is a small cover, probably covering a drain, not a hole to the centre of the earth. I have a few around the house. Cable tie, piece of string, lift it out no problem. You lift and slide it aside, it's not going to fall in unless you're a complete moron.
- If you're worried that this would take your finger off, you're the kind of person who should hire an electrician to change a light bulb. The electricity will kill you in an instant, don't ya know.
- Comment on This manhole placement is more than mildly infuriating 8 months ago:
Don't be lazy.
Get a cable tie or some tongs, pull it out, rotate 90 degrees, done.
- Comment on Amsterdam testing system that can remotely slow e-bikes down 9 months ago:
- AFAIK 60km/h let alone 60mph e-bikes aren't road legal in the Netherlands. 60mph is something like 95km/h. To give you an idea, most motorways are 100km/h in the Netherlands. To drive something that fast you'd need a full motorcycle license, insurance, etc.
- Certainly they're not allowed on cycle paths.
- Even if they were, Amsterdam has a citywide speed limit of 30km/h. That's under 20mp/h.
- Comment on How is Russia not Financially Crippled? 11 months ago:
- One of their sources is Sudanese gold. Basically, they're helping to exacerbate the genocide in Sudan, so they can fund their genocide in Ukraine.
- Russia has arguably won the sanctions war. They've shifted trade to China and India. Or they're exporting raw materials through third countries to Europe, or transfering oil at sea, bypassing sanctions at a relatively low cost.
- Made deals with other oil producing countries to not increase production, so that prices remain stable.
- War isn't that expensive, unless you're the US. North Korea. Dirt poor country, almost entirely cut off from the world, still manages to maintain a sizeable military and even develop nuclear weapons. Russia? Old soviet stock that was rusting in a barn, troops you only pay if they survive, or don't pay at all. Send prisoners to the front, saves money on prisons. Send people from the poorest regions, so you don't have to pay them much, and it doesn't negatively affect productivity that much.
- Do like the Russians did during and after WW2. Rape and pillage. Russia is actively stealing Ukrainian resources, equipment and grain from the occupied territories.
- Sell (or barter with) pariah states like North Korea or Iran military technology they would otherwise not have access too, like nuclear or ballistic tech.
- Comment on How will I find financial stability if I live in a third world country with a toxic sociopathic/narcissistic mother, I have no skills (at least I think so), no time and therefore no money? 11 months ago:
Normal people, in principle, do not live in this country.
They do, it's just that like you they've learnt to be careful about what they say, and to only look out for themselves out of hard experience. Or they once cared, but life ground them down, so they sought escape in alcohol or whatever.
Not that this helps, but maybe it'll help you feel less lonely, when someone says something stupid. They may simply be pretending to be an idiot.
Obviously, this is by design. If people were open about being unhappy about their country, this would threaten the government.
I can't help you with work, but reading and podcasts can be a great help when you don't have access to mental health services.

Honestly, when it comes to duolingo, you're probably best off sticking to Spanish or stuff like that.
I tried out a course in my native language, and it really wasn't great beyond the basics. Loads of mistakes.

- Comment on This app lets restaurants and coffee shops charge to use the bathroom 11 months ago:
I've encountered them in Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, and France.
Not everywhere though, and restaurants often have free toilets for customers. Mostly in cities, busy places.
Germany has paying toilets near on the Autobahn, but last time I checked you get a rebate coupon to buy something in the shop or cafe.
Not necessarily opposed to them. Some people are animals and 50 cents keeps out the worst of them and helps keep things clean.
- Comment on PS6 rumors coming in hot 11 months ago:
While that is funny, I do find it annoying when supposedly reputable news organisations act like they'll ever sell these in significant quantities, and that this is anything other than a marketing campaign.
- Comment on What's your favorite game that you will NEVER finish? 11 months ago:
IRC they just released the latest chapter of sim settlements, so yeah. I'll probably return to FO4 in a year or two. Fallout London is also progressing, so that should be interesting. Thanks to content mods, you can largely skip the main quests of the original game.
It's become the new skyrim.
I think skyrim's golden age of modding is largely a thing of the past, but I haven't played it in a few years (500+ mods at the time), so please correct me if I'm wrong.

How would we know though?
He's an A-lister and he's represented by a big talent agency and production company.
They can quite easily squash stories, simply by refusing media access to other stars or productions on their roster.
Hell, for all we know he could be on Epstein's list. Or he could be secretly donating money to donkey sanctuaries. Who knows?

Perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, but I think cyberpunk would have been just as good without Keanu in it. I assume they mainly hired him for marketing purposes because he's famous and a meme.

A half hour cycle commute really isn't far. Almost anyone can do that, almost certainly including your grandma.
The real problem is the lack of infrastructure.
