Yeah, my last few theater experiences weren't great. Toddlers screaming and adults talking on their phone (note: neither we're kids movies). I'm sorry, but that's not the experience I shelled out a bunch of money for. The home 65" might not be as immersive, but it's quiet and I can pause it to to go pee and that's a massive win in my book.

I don't know if you like podcasts, but Know Your Enemy is a take on the right from two leftists who used to be conservatives who approach it from an intellectual POV.
I linked to the political magazine that helps support them since it gives some rundowns of their topics that might give you some of the sources that can be read instead of listening to their podcast, if you'd prefer.

Losing access to personalized YT would suck, but losing decades of emails would suck even more. I share your sentiment that I fear what these companies are going to do next in the pursuit of more money they can burn and/or give to shareholders as they continue to tank their reputations.

I, personally, don't see that happening, but I can easily imagine them making it a TOS violation to use adblock and then killing your account if you continue to do so :-/
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 7 months ago:
Same with Google's ads in general. For a long time they were whitelisted by default on just about every adblock list out there because they were so unobtrusive it didn't make sense to bother blocking them, especially when you compared them to the other ads that were common at the time. They were also generally relevant ads, so people actually did click on them and use them since it actually related to the thing they were searching for.
They're obviously more profitable now, but you have to wonder by how much and if they'd be a more trusted company today (and what's that worth monetarily) if they hadn't gone down this race to the bottom.

I think aliens would be horrified by so many things we do (or don't do!) that wearing an entertainment device on your face wouldn't even break the top 100.

For me, it's the refusal to demontize them that's particularly bad. I can understand free speech absolutists (in theory anyways, in practice you'll find that they VERY rarely actually are and will happily censor people they disagree with like LGBTQIA+ or sex work content), but that doesn't mean you need to actively be funding them!

Substack says it will not remove or demonetize Nazi content
Quite a few organizations and lots of individuals are now starting to migratev away from it and if any of the money made by visiting goes to Nazis, many of us would prefer to avoid the place when possible.

Firing the people that do the work to make the company money is just good business! They're a dime a dozen, just hire another 2 managers and a couple marketing execs and soon you'll be printing money! /s [these companies are freaking dumb]
It's crazy what you can get away with when you have some money and no sense!
- Comment on Employees Say ‘Sizable Portion’ Of Gearbox-Owned Studio Has Been Laid Off 11 months ago:
For the people that don't want to read the article, this seems especially relevant:
But much has changed since 2022: Embracer, which owns Gearbox, bet the house on a $2 billion deal with a Saudi investment group that fell through in 2023. Ever since, its many, many properties have been hit by layoffs on a near-monthly basis. - Comment on I'm locked out of my 6 year old Chipotle account because they now say my email address is invalid when I login. I believe they're saying that Chipotle is helping OP by making it so OP doesn't eat there.

I dunno why the movie going public was disappointed.
This movie delivered exactly what it promised. If you watched this movie after seeing a trailer for it and somehow found yourself disappointed, I don't really know what to tell you. I feel like it fucking delivered on everything it promised.
Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece, occasionally something can just be stupid fun.

It's a free trial. If you flat out say you have no interest in having their service, why would they continue giving it to you for free‽
If you pay for the service, you get it until the end of the payment period.
- Comment on Seattle becomes first in U.S. to protect gig workers from sudden 'deactivation' 1 year ago:
Do a quick Google search for "right to work vs at will employment" because you've got them mixed up.
Additionally, the gig folks don't have a contract that protects them and they're being classified as contractors when (it's being argued) they shouldn't be. That's literally the issue.

That is a funner fact!

'Right to work' has to do with not being required to be in a Union in order to get a job (ie, you have a right to work at a location whether you're in the union or not).
Right to work is bullshit and definitely helped in gutting the unions, but, I'm not sure how that has to do with anything to do with gig workers at all.

Fun Fact!
Daniel O'Brien writes on John Oliver & he was a writer at Cracked with Robert Evans (Behind the Bastards, It Could Happen Here, etc...), Cody Johnston & Katie Stoll (both on - Some More News, Even More News, etc...) and while they've all got their own voice, they're also very similar at the same time.
