And people wonder why I delete my account.
I feel this. Theres a lot of hostility here on Lemmy sometimes. People say it’s just as bad as Reddit but imo it can be a lot worse. It’s shame because I really want the fediverse to grow, but this seems like a silent hurdle hindering that growth (how many newbies delete their account before even getting that active? Anecdotally it seems like a high percentage). Even just pointing out that some people on Lemmy have behavioural issues can attract derision (I fully expect downvotes for this comment, for example). People here seem unwilling to face this problem

This is the most in depth response yet, thank you
From my point of view is not if there will be a pandemic virus that would wipe out a high chunk of the population. I think that’s guaranteed if we don’t change our traveling habits. It’s just a matter of when.
Yes I agree with you actually. The reasoning behind this conclusion is airtight, yet no one wants to go there because it’s such a disturbing thought.
And even though the COVID lab leak theory is controversial, there have been well documented lab leaks of other biohazards. If we keep poking around with these things it increases the odds of this happening even further, whether that be by a malicious actor doing it intentionally or someone letting it slip by mistake

Brutal honesty here: you are taking this Lemmy thread too seriously
- Comment on How worried should we be about hantavirus right now? 5 days ago:
Okay so this is concerning. I do think there is some wishful thinking in this thread. I wound bet on it reaching covid levels but it seems some concern is warranted

Apparently this strain does

Im not saying that hantavirus is the next COVID. I just was saying that I wouldnt dismiss it solely because Im worried about the media hyping things up, because that can apply to anything
- Comment on How worried should we be about hantavirus right now? 6 days ago:
It’s fucked up but you’re seeing so much about it online and hearing so much about it because sensationalized fear translates to money and attention for those seeking such things.
This is exactly the sort of reasoning I used to downplay COVID though

Deadly viruses can be very contagious as long as there is a period of time where the host can spread it asymptomatically before symptom onset. As far as I’m aware hantavirus doesn’t have that though? Sounds like shit just hits the fan right away
- Comment on How worried should we be about hantavirus right now? 6 days ago:
From what I understand, you fan still have a really deadly virus thats super contagious, as long as there is a window of time where a host can spread the virus asymptomatically (then, once its spread, they started getting hit hard with the symptoms). I’m guessing hantavirus doesn’t have this characteristic?

Is all species membership defined by self-identity? What about animals who do not have the mental capacity required to self identify. Like, is an oyster an oyster because it can self identify, or because it has an oyster genome?

It’s very difficult to talk someone out of a delusion, but not impossible (thats what things like cognitive behavioural therapy are for).
Can you answer my question tho? If you have a human mind and a human body then in what sene are you an animal? Maybe I will understand better if you explain this to me
- Comment on Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans? 2 weeks ago:
I’m not saying it’s weird. Im saying it’s delusional. I’m also not trying to be super rude or dismissive here, I’m just not trying to affirm any delusions, because that can be dangerous (see, for example, ChatGTP, and how its tendency to validate everything someone says can cause a mental health crisis in some users).
Here’s my thinking: but you agree that you are biologically not an animal. And you must agree that you have the mind of a human (we are conversing in a human language, and using the internet, which requires abstract human reasoning to do). And you have the body of a human (you seem to admit as much). So there’s a human mind in a human body. So what’s left? Isn’t that enough to make you demonstrably human?

If someone said “I am literally God” would you need to be a trained psychiatrist to identify that as a delusion? You would not. Same goes here.
- Comment on Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans? 2 weeks ago:
It’s also what sane people say to people experiencing delusions.
- Comment on Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans? 2 weeks ago:
This is stupid
- Comment on Why is society at large okay with euthanasia for pets but not for humans? 2 weeks ago:
Because the talking animals I know tend to prefer “it”. The ones who were unfortunately born in human bodies, I mean.
If they can talk, they have a human mind. And apparently they have a human body. Idk man kinda just sounds like you’re talking to humans to me

Most animals humans own live in factory farms. So this is just objectively false

Yeah I got major downvotes on here once for saying MAiD for mental health problems seems ripe for abuse. Isn’t suicidal ideation a symptom of many mental health issues? And the state is just going to help people fulfil those urges rather than treating the underlying illness causing them? Seems crazy to me

There’s more profit to be made off a sick person slowly dying over years than a one-time procedure.
This would only really apply in America. Most Western countries have at publicly funded healthcare systems, yet most of them do not have legal euthanasia for humans

Why not use “they”? Its gender neutral without being objectifying

So you think you’re not a person. Do you think you’re still entitled to legal personhood? Or would you rather forfeit all the legal protections that come with that?

It’s not that risky to become a doctor. It’s true that it requires going into a lot of debt but when you’re guaranteed a starting wage of 400k minimum once you graduate, then that’s not a major concern for most people. That said I do think more can and should be done to recruit people from rural areas, especially people from indigenous communities

That’s a very succinct explanation

The historical context definitely helps illuminate the issue. I’m not sure why you’re getting downvotes, this was an interesting analysis

There are advantages to having private companies and competition, but those advantages tend to disappear as the economy becomes more developed and saturated, and the tendency of the rate of profit to decline kicks in. Once companies can’t increase profits by expanding in productive ways, all they do is enshittify their products and look for new and innovative ways to fleece their customers.
This is a good point
