- Comment on Behold, "the whole story of Steam's economy in one picture": the top 1% of games earn 84.5% of estimated revenue, and most games barely make anything 8 hours ago:
It’s also just the fact that some games are better than others. For every Factorio and Hollow Knight, there are a thousand other games that aren’t nearly as good that significantly less people buy.

You get a pension in retirement (called Social Security), but you need to be of retirement age as well as had a job in the past (you get full benefits if you were employed for at least 10 years).

If he was living at home, paying a portion of all the bills, and overall carrying his weight, then sure. But, that is not the case, not at all.

The dude is 38 and never got off his ass. How long are you going to enable this?
His parents are almost certainly 65+ and cannot afford to support themselves and a leech.

Something tells me they have been trying to get him out for the last decade, and he instead decided to sit on his ass instead.

We do, there are plenty of programs to help you get a job.
- Comment on How hopeless is getting a job with a CS degree? 3 days ago:
am a developer with a few big projects under my belt
I’ve got quite a bit of experience with Linux and I manage a home server, , but that probably doesn’t differentiate me much
It 100% does if you target small companies. Think 10-30 man shows where an ‘IT department’ is a luxurious dream. In that company you wear many hats and having IT/devops experience as a programmer is a big deal.
- Comment on How hopeless is getting a job with a CS degree? 3 days ago:
You are WAY better off keeping that job than going to college. You know what is more valuable than someone with one year of experience? Someone with five years of experience. Plus, you won’t have a house payment worth of debt on the other end.
- Comment on Netflix to shut down two game studios: Night School and Moonloot 6 days ago:
I think the real reason is nobody plays Netflix games. Vast majority of people don’t even know they exist; and those who do often don’t have a device that can run them.
- Comment on Anon follows the rules 1 week ago:
Usually those two things are a day apart. The statement has always been: don’t do shit that might get you kids out of wed-lock.
Once you are married, that obviously isn’t an issue.
- Comment on Absolutely 2 weeks ago:
Yeah, fast food used to be fast and cheap, now it is neither. No reason to waste money there, so now 99% of my food comes from the grocery store. So. Much. Cheaper.
- Comment on Absolutely 2 weeks ago:
Burger parts cost ~$2 at the grocery store.
Don’t spend $25 for a burger.
- Comment on Men are generous 2 weeks ago:
That’s not surprising. People may be open to an idea in their head, then in practice realize that long-term, committed relationships don’t mesh with having sex with others.
- Comment on PSBLACKOUT (boycott of PlayStation) 3 weeks ago:
Yeah, switching to PC is a significantly more effective boycott strategy. You can still play games and give Sony $0.

Meanwhile in Palworld, you can butcher your pals with a cleaver and feed them to others.
- Comment on Being poor is expensive 5 weeks ago:
That’s not true if you have bad enough credit
Lots of banks specifically cater to people with bad credit and banking histories as well. Here is a Forbes article about them with a list.
- Comment on Being poor is expensive 5 weeks ago:
When you’re too poor to have an account, you have to go to a check cashing place and pay to get paid.
Use that check to open a bank account. Virtually every bank will give you a free account if you deposit your paycheck with them.
- Comment on Being poor is expensive 5 weeks ago:
Are you saying that someone could actually be so poor that a bank will refuse them from opening a checking account?
Most banks only require a nominal initial deposit (something on the order of $20) in order to open a free account.
If you really don’t have any money other than your paycheck, you can open that bank account…with the check you need to deposit.

They do. At the very top of this page, click the heart.
- Comment on Why does dried pasta have an expiration date 5 weeks ago:
Shelf-stable food is almost permanently good to eat. The dates mean nothing.
Dried food can go bad if it gets wet, regardless of the date.
Canned food can go bad if the packaging is pierced, regardless of the date.
- Comment on Is the Switch 2 a waste of money? 1 month ago:
The cheaper games easily make up for that. Particularly since games that you have owned for decades just work, no repurchase required. Have you seen how expensive Nintendo games are? Even on sale they are extremely expensive.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 month ago:
That shit annoys me (as it is real easy to avoid, the covers come off easily). At least swapping out an outlet and outlet cover is an easy and cheap fix if you are the owner. $10, 5-min job per outlet.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 month ago:
A shitload of effort and material goes into building a home, a home will always be the single most expensive thing people own. The idea people won’t care about it is a fantasy.
Now, what you do tend to get is people who settle down and pick a single home to live in the rest of their lives. Those tend to slowly bend more and more to the owner’s preferences. It’s easier to justify a $xxx, xxx renovation when you will live in the home for decades to come.
- Comment on Is the Switch 2 a waste of money? 1 month ago:
If you already have a Switch, there doesn’t seem to be much point in buying the Switch 2. If you don’t have either, I would highly suggest looking at the Steam Deck, which has a significantly more vast library of great games and is overall a better product.

I’m not sure how they compare to schools abroad, but Community Colleges in the US are significantly cheaper than Universities in the US. (Community colleges get even cheaper if one goes to a community college in their home state.) It might be worth looking into those.
California, especially Los Angeles
You are also looking at one of the most expensive places in the US. Everything costs more there.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 month ago:
Exactly. Making it look good, while not doing the standard whites or muted pastels using standard trims is expensive.
You can sometimes find an old home that has a bunch of that done well, but to keep it affordable, it probably looks bad and needed a sand and refinish 30 years ago, which puts a ton of buyers off as they are buying a very visible, labor-intensive project.

Maybe they should try making good single player games again. Their massive-budget live-service games have proven unsustainable.
- Comment on Steam Machine pricing announced (from $1049-$1428 USD), reservation lists open 1 month ago:
Note yours is only 70€ less because it is missing the storage and power supply prices.
Just mentioning this as it actually makes your point stronger.
- Comment on Epic Games unveils Launcher V2 in re-attempt to topple Steam, says redesigned storefront is up to 6.5x faster — promises player profiles, user reviews, universal controller support, and much more 1 month ago:
Yeah, GOG is at least offering DRM-free games. That gives them one big plus over Steam.
I can’t name a single thing Epic does better than Steam or GOG. (and no, free games doesn’t count once you start asking me for money when I don’t trust you)
