- Comment on Why does dried pasta have an expiration date 23 hours ago:
Shelf-stable food is almost permanently good to eat. The dates mean nothing.
Dried food can go bad if it gets wet, regardless of the date.
Canned food can go bad if the packaging is pierced, regardless of the date.
- Comment on Is the Switch 2 a waste of money? 1 week ago:
The cheaper games easily make up for that. Particularly since games that you have owned for decades just work, no repurchase required. Have you seen how expensive Nintendo games are? Even on sale they are extremely expensive.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 week ago:
That shit annoys me (as it is real easy to avoid, the covers come off easily). At least swapping out an outlet and outlet cover is an easy and cheap fix if you are the owner. $10, 5-min job per outlet.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 week ago:
A shitload of effort and material goes into building a home, a home will always be the single most expensive thing people own. The idea people won’t care about it is a fantasy.
Now, what you do tend to get is people who settle down and pick a single home to live in the rest of their lives. Those tend to slowly bend more and more to the owner’s preferences. It’s easier to justify a $xxx, xxx renovation when you will live in the home for decades to come.
- Comment on Is the Switch 2 a waste of money? 1 week ago:
If you already have a Switch, there doesn’t seem to be much point in buying the Switch 2. If you don’t have either, I would highly suggest looking at the Steam Deck, which has a significantly more vast library of great games and is overall a better product.

I’m not sure how they compare to schools abroad, but Community Colleges in the US are significantly cheaper than Universities in the US. (Community colleges get even cheaper if one goes to a community college in their home state.) It might be worth looking into those.
California, especially Los Angeles
You are also looking at one of the most expensive places in the US. Everything costs more there.
- Comment on When will the all white home with grey floors trend be over? 1 week ago:
Exactly. Making it look good, while not doing the standard whites or muted pastels using standard trims is expensive.
You can sometimes find an old home that has a bunch of that done well, but to keep it affordable, it probably looks bad and needed a sand and refinish 30 years ago, which puts a ton of buyers off as they are buying a very visible, labor-intensive project.

Maybe they should try making good single player games again. Their massive-budget live-service games have proven unsustainable.
- Comment on Steam Machine pricing announced (from $1049-$1428 USD), reservation lists open 2 weeks ago:
Note yours is only 70€ less because it is missing the storage and power supply prices.
Just mentioning this as it actually makes your point stronger.
- Comment on Epic Games unveils Launcher V2 in re-attempt to topple Steam, says redesigned storefront is up to 6.5x faster — promises player profiles, user reviews, universal controller support, and much more 3 weeks ago:
Yeah, GOG is at least offering DRM-free games. That gives them one big plus over Steam.
I can’t name a single thing Epic does better than Steam or GOG. (and no, free games doesn’t count once you start asking me for money when I don’t trust you)
- Comment on Which browser do you recommend for a low-resource PC? 3 weeks ago:
Firefox is pretty much the gold standard. But, it likely won’t do terribly better.
Can you get another 4gb in there? Would help a ton.
- Comment on Microsoft has considered spinning off Xbox, the Information reports 3 weeks ago:
They are only considering it now as they have driven the XBOX brand to an all-time low. Would have been best if they did this before all the weird PC branding* and Series X stuff. Made the entire brand a confusing mess.
-
Why does the ROG XBOX ALLY not play XBOX games?
-
Why does Windows have XBOX plastered all over it when it doesn’t play XBOX games?
-
Since the XBOX consoles are literally just PCs under the hood, why not actually unify XBOX games?

- Comment on Is it just me or does it seem Google is either AI filled or becoming obsolete? Is there an up and comer that can be what Google used to be? Or are we stuck oogling stuff forever? 1 month ago:
Google seems hell-bent on AI; DuckDuckGo lets you easily disable AI search. Try it out.
- Comment on The rich convinced us that taxing them is too complicated but everyday people can be taxed pretty easily 1 month ago:
Wealthy folks (in general) are heavily involved in property and consequently pay considerable property taxes.
It is taxed as such as it is a limited resource.
- Comment on What happened to the protesters or protests in Iran before Trump started his crap with Iran? Would screwing around with the leadership just empower the protesters? 1 month ago:
Iran mass-murdered the last protestors. They are scared of the same result.
- Comment on Do you think defense attorneys who defend cops who unjustly killed people are ‘good’ people? 1 month ago:
Our entire system is built on both the prosecution and defense having a competent lawyer. You get dumb shit like mistrials if the defense attorney is incompetent.
- Comment on What's the deal with AI datacenters using water for cooling? 1 month ago:
I appreciate it. <3
- Comment on What's the deal with AI datacenters using water for cooling? 1 month ago:
From the video:
Even under the maximlist goals of AI companies, the projected increase of water use is small compared to what cities and industries already use.
He even mentions how US corn uses 80x more water than worldwide AI use; with 40% of that corn burned as ethanol.
- Comment on What's the deal with AI datacenters using water for cooling? 1 month ago:
The water gets used over and over and over in the data center. It’s in a loop. The reporting that data centers consume vast quantities of water completely misunderstand the core concept of a water loop.

Iran is blockading some traffic, notably not their own and those that pay protection.

- Comment on Xbox as a platform is officially dead 4 months ago:
I, for a long time, wanted Microsoft to delete the difference between PC and Console. They are the same hardware, they can run the same software. Valve achieved this with the Steam Deck. I just wonder how Microsoft is going to manage to fuck it up.
I’m confused by the pessimistic reactions, though.
Microsoft has done an amazing job of destroying all good-will. And it’s why I and an increasing share of people stopped using Windows (I still have to suffer with it at work though).
-
Why is there an Xbox app in Windows? It doesn’t help play Steam games.
-
Why are there ads in the start menu?
-
Why are there two control panels? Why do I always have to hunt to find the old one because the new one doesn’t do what is needed?
-
Why are there popup ads in the notification window?
-
Why do I need an online account, or a hidden fucking terminal, just to get the OS going?
-
Why is Copilot fucking everywhere?
-
Why does the OS hoover fuckloads of data and send it to Microsoft?
-
No, but seriously, why are there ads?
These are all questions that are relavent when you ask about why people are pessimistic about Microsoft merging PC and Xbox. All of the above questions apply, but then you get to ask, in addition:
-
How locked down will this be?
-
How many ads will there be?
-
Will multiplayer require monthly payments?
-
- Comment on Xbox as a platform is officially dead 4 months ago:
They were pretty damn fun. Other games like C&C Generals were a blast as well.
We have since upgraded to beer and boardgames, which still hold their charm. :)
